Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch

Is Your Home Wired for Safe Generator Backup , or Just Hoping for the Best? You've run extension cords through cracked windows, daisy-chained power strips, and crossed your fingers during the last outage. It works, barely, but it's not safe and it's not sustainable. Worse, connecting a generator without a proper transfer switch risks back-feeding live power onto the utility grid , a situation that can injure or kill the lineworkers trying to restore your power. Without a code-compliant switching solution, you're one bad storm away from a dangerous situation, a voided homeowner's insurance claim, or a failed inspection. The Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch eliminates all of that. It creates a clean, legal, and reliable connection between your standby generator and your home's electrical panel , no extension cords, no improvised setups, no liability. Code-compliant switching: Meets NEC requirements for Service Equipment Disconnect, so your installation passes inspection the first time. Back-feed protection: Physically prevents generator power from reaching the utility grid, protecting utility workers and your equipment. 100-amp capacity: Handles whole-home backup loads when paired with a compatible Briggs & Stratton standby generator. NEMA 3R outdoor enclosure: Rated for rain, sleet, and ice , built to live outside year-round without corroding or failing. Designed for PowerProtect compatibility: Engineered specifically for the Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect and PowerProtect+ standby generator lineup, so integration is straightforward. 100A SED Transfer Switch Features & Performance Service Equipment Disconnect (SED) Design The SED designation isn't just a label , it means this transfer switch is rated to serve as the main service disconnect for your home. That matters for code compliance and for the safety of anyone working on your electrical system. It simplifies the installation footprint and satisfies inspection requirements that a standard transfer switch cannot. NEMA 3R Outdoor-Rated Enclosure Standby generators live outside, and so does this transfer switch. The NEMA 3R enclosure is built to resist windblown rain, sleet, and external ice formation. It won't rust out after two winters or let moisture compromise your connections. This is the kind of durability that matters when you need the system to work during the worst weather of the year. 100-Amp Capacity for Whole-Home Coverage At 100 amps, this transfer switch supports whole-home backup configurations , not just a handful of critical circuits. When your standby generator kicks on, your HVAC, refrigerator, lights, and essential appliances can all run without manual circuit juggling. For homeowners who want true whole-home coverage, the 100A rating is the right starting point. Seamless Integration with Briggs & Stratton Standby Generators This transfer switch is engineered specifically for the Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect and PowerProtect+ standby generator lineup. That means the communication, switching logic, and physical connections are designed to work together from day one , no adapters, no workarounds, no guesswork for the installing electrician. If you're building out a complete Briggs & Stratton backup system, you may also want to explore the Briggs & Stratton Symphony II Line Voltage Module (50A) for expanded load management options. Ideal Use Cases for the Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch New standby generator installations: If you're having a Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect or PowerProtect+ generator installed, this transfer switch is the correct companion component. Your electrician will appreciate the purpose-built compatibility , it keeps the installation clean and the inspection straightforward. Upgrading from an extension cord setup: If you've been running cords through windows or doors during outages, this is the upgrade that makes your backup power system legitimate. One proper installation replaces years of improvised workarounds. Whole-home backup power: Homeowners who want their HVAC, well pump, refrigerator, and lighting covered during an outage need a 100A solution. This transfer switch handles the load without forcing you to manually prioritize circuits during a stressful situation. Electricians and contractors: Licensed electricians installing Briggs & Stratton standby systems will find this transfer switch straightforward to spec and install. The SED rating satisfies code requirements without requiring additional disconnect hardware. For installations that also involve load management, the Briggs & Stratton Symphony II Low Voltage Dual Module pairs well with this switch for dual-zone control. Replacing an aging or non-compliant transfer switch: If your current switching setup is outdated, undersized, or failed an inspection, the 100A Standard SED is a direct path to a compliant, reliable system. Why Choose the 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch Over a Basic Manual Switch Basic manual transfer switches require someone to physically flip circuits during an outage , which means someone has to be home, awake, and aware the power went out. The 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch, paired with a compatible Briggs & Stratton standby generator, handles the switching automatically. The generator starts, the transfer switch opens the utility connection, and your home is on backup power , often before you've noticed the outage. Compared to smaller or non-SED-rated switches, this unit's 100-amp capacity and Service Equipment Disconnect designation give you whole-home coverage and full code compliance in a single component. You're not cobbling together a solution , you're installing a system that was engineered to work together. Briggs & Stratton has been manufacturing power equipment for over a century. Their standby generator lineup and supporting components are designed with that same engineering discipline , built to last, built to code, and built to perform when it matters most. Frequently Asked Questions About the Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch What does "SED" mean on the Briggs & Stratton 100A transfer switch, and why does it matter? SED stands for Service Equipment Disconnect, which means this transfer switch is rated to serve as the main disconnect for your home's electrical service. This designation is required by the National Electrical Code in many installations and allows the transfer switch to fulfill the role of a main breaker at the service entrance. It simplifies the installation and ensures your system passes inspection without requiring a separate disconnect component. Which Briggs & Stratton generators are compatible with the 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch? The 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch (SKU 071210) is designed for use with Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect and PowerProtect+ standby generators. It is not a universal transfer switch , it's purpose-built for this generator lineup to ensure proper communication and switching behavior. If you're unsure whether your specific generator model is compatible, contact our power specialists before ordering. Does the Briggs & Stratton 100A SED Transfer Switch work automatically, or does someone have to manually flip it? When paired with a compatible Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect or PowerProtect+ standby generator, the transfer switch operates automatically. When utility power fails, the generator starts and the transfer switch disconnects the home from the grid and connects it to generator power , typically within seconds. No manual intervention is required, which is one of the key advantages of a standby system over a portable generator setup. Can the Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch be installed outdoors year-round? Yes. The NEMA 3R enclosure rating means this transfer switch is designed for permanent outdoor installation. NEMA 3R enclosures protect against windblown rain, sleet, and external ice formation, making them suitable for year-round outdoor use in most North American climates. It's the correct enclosure type for a component that lives beside your standby generator on the exterior of your home. Is a 100-amp transfer switch enough for whole-home backup power? For many homes, a 100-amp transfer switch provides sufficient capacity for whole-home backup when paired with an appropriately sized standby generator. Whether it covers your specific home depends on your total electrical load and the output of your generator. An electrician can perform a load calculation to confirm the 100A rating is the right fit for your household's needs before installation begins. Do I need a licensed electrician to install the Briggs & Stratton 100A SED Transfer Switch? Yes. Transfer switch installation involves working with your home's main electrical service and must be performed by a licensed electrician in virtually all jurisdictions. Improper installation can create serious safety hazards, including back-feeding live power onto the utility grid. A licensed electrician will also pull the necessary permits and ensure the installation meets local code requirements. Still have questions? Contact our power specialists before you order.
