Briggs & Stratton 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch

Is Your Home's Generator Connection Actually Safe and Code-Compliant? You've run extension cords through cracked windows, tripped over them in the dark, and hoped for the best during a multi-day outage. It works, barely, but it's not safe, it's not practical, and it's not legal. Worse, back-feeding power into the utility grid without a proper transfer switch can kill the lineworkers trying to restore power in your neighborhood. That's not a risk worth taking. Without a dedicated transfer switch, every outage forces a choice between convenience and safety. Critical circuits go unpowered, appliances run off undersized extension cords, and your generator's potential goes largely wasted. The Briggs & Stratton 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch eliminates all of that. It gives you a clean, code-compliant path between your generator and your home's electrical panel, so the right circuits stay powered and everyone stays safe. 100-amp capacity: Handles serious electrical loads across your selected circuits without straining the system. 16-circuit coverage: Enough capacity to protect your refrigerator, sump pump, furnace, lighting, and more simultaneously. NEMA 3R enclosure: Rated for outdoor installation, keeping internal components protected from rain, sleet, and dust. Code-compliant design: Eliminates back-feed risk and satisfies NEC requirements for generator interconnection. Selected-load architecture: You choose which circuits matter most, so critical loads are always the priority during an outage. Briggs & Stratton compatibility: Engineered to work with B&S generators manufactured 2019 and later for reliable, tested performance. Features & Performance of the B&S 100A 16-Circuit Switch 100-Amp Rating At 100 amps, this transfer switch handles the electrical demands of a well-equipped home backup setup. You're not limited to a handful of small appliances. Run your refrigerator, sump pump, well pump, HVAC blower, and lighting circuits simultaneously without pushing the system to its limits. 16-Circuit Selected-Load Design Selected-load transfer switches give you control. Rather than switching your entire panel, you designate the 16 circuits that matter most during an outage. That means your generator's output goes exactly where it needs to go, not wasted on circuits you don't need running at 2 a.m. during a storm. NEMA 3R Weatherproof Enclosure The NEMA 3R-rated enclosure is built for outdoor mounting. It resists rain, sleet, and windblown debris, so you can install this switch in the most practical location without worrying about weather exposure degrading the unit over time. For installations requiring additional switching modules, the Briggs & Stratton Symphony II Line Voltage Module (50A) is worth exploring as a compatible expansion option. Important Compatibility Notes This transfer switch is designed for Briggs & Stratton generators manufactured in 2019 or later. It is not compatible with older B&S units. Breakers and the generator whip are not included and must be sourced separately. Confirm your generator's model year and panel configuration before ordering. See full specifications below for complete technical details. Ideal Use Cases for the 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch Whole-home critical circuit backup: A severe storm knocks out power for three days. With this transfer switch properly installed, you flip one switch and your refrigerator, sump pump, furnace blower, and key lighting circuits come back online. No extension cords, no guesswork. Permanent generator installations: Homeowners who've invested in a standby or portable generator want a permanent, professional-grade connection. This switch provides exactly that, a fixed, code-compliant interface that's ready every time the grid goes down. Electrician-installed residential projects: Licensed electricians specifying transfer switches for residential clients need a reliable, NEC-compliant solution that installs cleanly and satisfies inspection requirements. The NEMA 3R enclosure and 16-circuit capacity make this a practical choice for most single-family home applications. Flood-prone or storm-heavy regions: If your home has a sump pump, losing power during a flood event is a worst-case scenario. A properly wired transfer switch ensures your sump pump circuit is always among the first loads covered when the generator kicks on. Upgrading from extension cord workarounds: If you've been running cords through windows or doors, this switch is the upgrade that makes your generator setup legitimate, safe, and far more useful during an actual emergency. Why Choose the Briggs & Stratton 16-Circuit Switch Over a Manual Interlock or Smaller Unit? A manual interlock kit costs less upfront, but it switches your entire panel, meaning your generator has to carry every circuit that happens to be on. That's an easy way to overload a generator and damage appliances. The 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch gives you deliberate load selection, so your generator only powers what you've chosen, protecting both the equipment and your home's wiring. Smaller 6- or 8-circuit transfer switches are fine for minimal backup needs, but 16 circuits gives you real flexibility. Most households running a refrigerator, sump pump, furnace, a few lights, and a phone charging circuit will fill 8 slots quickly. Having 16 means you're not forced to make painful trade-offs during an extended outage. Briggs & Stratton has been manufacturing power equipment for over a century. Their transfer switches are engineered to work in tandem with their generator lineup, which means you're not mixing and matching components from different ecosystems and hoping they play nicely together. If you're evaluating a simpler installation, the Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch is another option worth comparing for your specific setup. Frequently Asked Questions What generators is the Briggs & Stratton 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch compatible with? This transfer switch is compatible with Briggs & Stratton generators manufactured in 2019 or later. It is not compatible with B&S generator models sold prior to 2019. Always verify your generator's model year before purchasing to ensure a proper match. Do I need to buy breakers separately for the 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch? Yes. Breakers and the generator whip (the cable connecting the generator to the transfer switch) are not included with this unit and must be sourced separately. A licensed electrician can help you specify the correct breaker types and amperage ratings for your selected circuits. Can I install the Briggs & Stratton 16-Circuit Transfer Switch outdoors? Yes. The NEMA 3R-rated enclosure is designed for outdoor installation and provides protection against rain, sleet, and windblown debris. It's a common choice for installations where the transfer switch needs to be mounted on an exterior wall near the main electrical panel. How does a 16-circuit selected-load transfer switch differ from a whole-house transfer switch? A selected-load transfer switch lets you designate specific circuits, up to 16 in this case, that will be powered by the generator during an outage. A whole-house switch transfers every circuit in your panel. Selected-load designs are typically preferred when your generator can't carry the full panel load, because they ensure your most critical circuits, like the refrigerator, sump pump, and furnace, are always prioritized. Is a permit or licensed electrician required to install the 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch? In most jurisdictions, yes. Transfer switch installation involves working inside your home's main electrical panel, which requires a licensed electrician and typically a permit. This ensures the installation meets NEC code requirements and passes inspection, which is important for both safety and homeowner's insurance purposes. Is the Briggs & Stratton 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch the right choice for my home? If you have a Briggs & Stratton generator from 2019 or later and want to back up 16 or fewer critical circuits in a residential setting, this switch is a strong fit. Homes with larger panels or different generator brands should evaluate compatibility carefully before ordering. Still have questions? Contact our power specialists before you order.
