Breathe

"Breathe" is one of our most popular images and has moved into our "Iconic Image" status because of the extreme limited quantity left in the edition. Our favorite and most signature images are these over/under shots. We had been trying to get this turtle with his head out over/under for many years. There are so many difficult elements that go into taking this shot but one of the hardest parts is the refraction in the water. We tried to take this shot when the turtle was about 2-3 feet away but the refraction of the water made the turtles head look much smaller than it's body and the image looked very awkward. So we quickly learned that the only way to make this image work was to have the turtles nose about 2 inches from the lens…which is rare! Not only is it hard to get a turtle to face you that close but to also have clear water, a pretty sky, and a calm ocean, that's almost impossible.
