Breaking the Surface by Zieba

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL MEETS FINDING NEMO IN THIS GLOBAL WARMING CRISIS YA SCIENCE FICTION STORY. When Flynn gets the chance to leave her home on the ocean floor to spend some time on the surface, she has a long list of things to do. Things like: make friends, eat a cheeseburger, go to the beach, shop, go on a date and get her driver's license. She didn't really expect "reverse a science experiment gone wrong" or "save family from impending doom" to show up on the list. But now that they have, what will she do? This book is author Amanda Zieba's young adult debut. It is an original dystopian that promises to deliver readers with drama and adventure. Join Flynn as she navigates the perils of high school and as she figures out how to define "home". "Amanda Zieba has brilliantly captured the attention of my fifth graders with this forward-thinking science fiction/adventure book. As educators, we are trying to find literature that opens the minds of our students and keeps them wondering and questioning the world around them. Educators also want their students looking through the lens to the future and how we will solve our world's most pressing issues. While providing my students with intriguing information, this book also showed how relationships are formed and how "home" is just a word. The students made critical comparisons between Flynn and Nora. Zieba used present day vocabulary and terms that the kids connected to. A must read for every upper elementary classroom!" - Brenda (5th Grade Teacher) Paperback, 252 pages.  Young adult fiction, fantasy.  Local author!
