Breaking Home Ties

This piece is influenced by Norman Rockwell’s, (1954) ”Breaking home ties”. An adolescent boy leaves behind the family farm and his loyal dog in pursuit of a different life far from the understanding of his parents, in search of the adventure of an unknown road. Here a mentor and his young apprentice are forced to accept their diverging paths. One looks toward the future in search of more, while the other stares bewildered, struggling in a past of unfulfilled promises. A boy leaves his faithful companion to hitch a ride with destiny and forge his new path as a leader. The moral upbringing of his youth is not enough to shield his eyes from the possibility of greater power. Like a kid becoming a man leaving his simple home and breaking the ties of a future obligation, he denies the value of what has come before him and yearns for an easier life with a larger fortune. The lantern which kept them safe in its warm light has fallen and can no longer comfort them on their journey. Goodbye old friend….we will meet again in the darkness.
