History of the Cedar Box Cedar boxes have a long history as containers for personal, cultural, and ceremonial items. Artisans value cedar for its natural aroma, insect‑resistant qualities, and durable grain. They shape the wood into boxes that protect feathers, textiles, medicines, and keepsakes. Many Native communities across North America use cedar boxes to safeguard items connected to ceremony and daily life. The wood keeps contents dry, clean, and free from pests. Craftspeople design these boxes with slide tops, hinged lids, or carved details. Over generations, cedar boxes have remained essential storage items. Their warm color, smooth finish, and protective qualities continue to make them a preferred choice for preserving meaningful belongings.
