Key Characteristics: Size: 7-8 inches in length Lifespan: 10-15 years (longer with exceptional care) Colors: Wild-type features soft pink breast, blue rump, brown wings, and intricate scalloping. Color mutations include stunning Rosy (pink), Cream, and Lutino. Temperament: Exceptionally gentle, quiet, peaceful, and non-aggressive. Unique Trait: Crepuscular – most active at dawn and dusk. The Bourkes Parrot Personality Bourkes are the quintessential “gentle giants” in a small package. They are known for their peaceful, non-confrontational nature, making them excellent candidates for mixed aviaries and calm households. They are not “cuddly” in the traditional sense but show affection through quiet companionship and soft chirps. Their crepuscular rhythm means they are lively and vocal at sunrise and sunset but tend to be calm and restful during the day and night. This can be perfect for people who work during the day. They are not known for talking or loud calls; their vocalizations are soft, melodic twitters and chirps. Available Bourkes Parrots We have hand-raised Bourkes Parrot babies available in both the beautiful wild-type coloration and select color mutations like Rosy and Cream. Care Requirements Housing: Cage Size: A wide flight cage (minimum 24″L x 18″W x 18″H) is better than a tall one, as they are ground foragers and horizontal flyers. Setup: Provide a soft substrate (paper) on the cage floor, multiple perches, and hiding spots. They are not heavy chewers. Diet: Base: A high-quality small seed mix (canary, millet) supplemented with small pellets. Fresh Foods: Spray millet, leafy greens, chopped vegetables, and soaked/sprouted seeds. Essential: Grit should be provided, as they are granivores that grind seeds in their crop. Water: Fresh daily; they enjoy bathing in a shallow dish. Social & Enrichment: They thrive in pairs or small flocks but can be kept singly with sufficient daily interaction. Enjoy foraging on the cage floor—scatter food to encourage natural behavior. Provide safe, quiet spaces to retreat, as they can be shy. Supervised time in a bird-safe room is appreciated. Frequently Asked Questions “Are they really that quiet?” Yes. They are arguably one of the quietest parrot species available. Their sounds are soft, pleasant chirps, especially at dawn and dusk. “Can they be tamed and hand-fed?” Absolutely. Hand-raised babies become very accustomed to people. Even parent-raised birds can become quite tame with patient, gentle interaction. “What does ‘crepuscular’ mean for an owner?” It means your Bourke will be most playful and vocal at sunrise and sunset. They often take a long “nap” during the middle of the day, making them low-maintenance daytime companions. “Are they good with other birds?” Their legendary peaceful nature makes them one of the best parrots for a mixed-species aviary, provided other species are also non-aggressive. These Bourkes Parrot are quiet, gentle and unassuming, with very endearing personalities. They are not known to be aggressive with other species. In our avairy they get along just fine with gouldian and society inches. However, their gentle nature may make them an easy mark for aggressive birds. Rosey bourke parakeet do well in planted aviaries, they are not likely to destroy any woodwork and breed readily. They will accept any parakeet nest box, as high up as possible to give them some sense of security and privacy. Providing more boxes than pairs will reduce the bickering over the favorite boxes. The average clutch consists of 3 to 6 eggs, which are incubated by the female for 18-19 days. The young bourke fledge when they are about 4 weeks old. The female also feeds and tends to the chicks by herself. While the female Bourke’s Parrot is incubating the eggs, and also while she is feeding the chicks in the nest, she is fed by the male. Life Expentancy of Rosey bourke parakeet: The expected lifespan is 10-15 years. However, some well-cared birds have surpassed this lifespan by several years. Rosey Bourke parakeet Diet: The diet for the Bourke should include a mixture of canary seeds and millets along with safflower and some sunflower seeds. Kale, boiled egg, spray millet, broccoli, grated carrot, corn and chopped apple can also be offered. We have offered other fruits and veggies but the above seem to be the ones they normally chose to eat. Rosey bourke parakeet accept sprouted or germinated seeds and prefer them over fruits and fresh vegetables.
