Last Bottle: Vinhos Borges 'Perola' Tinto

Vinhos Borges' story is one steeped in perseverance, innovation, and dedication to a craft that has been passed down through generations of winemakers. The company was established by brothers Antonio and Francisco all the way back in 1884 in the historic Douro region of Portugal. At the time the Douro Valley was known almost exclusively for its Port wines, but thanks to the efforts of Borges and others like them, the region's dry reds have become known today as some of the best values on the planet. And while Borges has been famed over the course of three centuries for both their Ports and their premier table wines, their newest additions are some of the most exciting yet. They wanted to expand their brand by producing 'high end selections' meant to be enjoyed every day, on every occasion, by everyone. An ambitious goal for any producer. But because their history stretches back so far, they've been fortunate enough to acquire some of the best vineyards in the country, sites that produced some of the very first Douro table reds. Case in point: Perola Tinto. This entry-level red continues to be one of the most approachable – and best value – bottlings in Borges' extensive portfolio. Composed of indigenous varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca, the grapes that go into this little stunner offer incredible depth and concentration. The palate brings bold yet balanced layers of red berries, dark plum, and crushed herbs, with nuanced earth and spice notes. These lively flavors are brought to life by smooth tannins and a soft mouthfeel, creating a wine that is intriguing and crowd-pleasing – all at an incredible price! Made From: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca
