Boomerang Triggerfish

The Boomerang Triggerfish, Sufflamen bursa, is a distinctive saltwater fish recognized by its gray to tan body, pale underside, blue-ringed eye, and bold curved markings behind the head that resemble a scythe or boomerang. These facial markings can range from yellowish to dark brown depending on age, mood, and individual coloration. Its compact, powerful body and prominent triggerfish profile give it a commanding presence without reaching the enormous proportions of some other trigger species. Native throughout the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa across northern Australia to Hawaii, the Marquesas, Pitcairn Islands, and southern Japan, this species inhabits clear inner and outer reefs from exposed algae-covered flats to deeper seaward drop-offs. In nature, it consumes a remarkably varied assortment of foods including crustaceans, mollusks, sea urchins, worms, tunicates, algae, eggs, and detritus. Intelligent, territorial, and highly interactive, the Boomerang Triggerfish is best suited to a spacious fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium with robust tankmates. Quick Care Guide Care Level: Moderate Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons Temperament: Aggressive Diet: Omnivore Reef Safe: No Region: Indo-Pacific Scientific Name: Sufflamen bursa Tank Requirements The Boomerang Triggerfish requires a spacious marine aquarium with sturdy rockwork, secure caves, and sufficient open swimming room. Adults reach approximately 10 inches, and a 125-gallon or larger aquarium provides appropriate long-term territory for this active and increasingly assertive species. Build the aquascape with substantial caves and crevices where the fish can retreat at night or when startled. Like other triggerfish, it can raise and lock its first dorsal spine to secure itself inside reef structure. Rockwork should be stable and positioned directly on a firm foundation, as mature triggerfish may investigate, shift, or overturn unsecured pieces. Moderate to strong circulation, excellent oxygenation, and efficient filtration are recommended. Because this species consumes substantial meaty foods and can produce a significant waste load, dependable nutrient export and consistent maintenance are important. A secure aquarium cover is also recommended, particularly during acclimation. Diet and Feeding The Boomerang Triggerfish is naturally omnivorous, consuming crustaceans, mollusks, worms, sea urchins, tunicates, algae, detritus, and other reef-associated foods. Offer a varied captive diet including mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, squid, clam, mussel, and other quality marine seafood. High-quality triggerfish or carnivore pellets and frozen marine blends can also be incorporated into the feeding routine. Occasional shell-on shrimp, clam, or mussel provides useful enrichment and encourages natural chewing behavior that helps maintain the fish's continuously growing teeth. Marine algae and other vegetable-based foods can also be offered periodically to reflect the broader natural diet. Feed once or twice daily, adjusting portions according to body condition and overall aquarium stocking. Temperament and Tankmates The Boomerang Triggerfish is territorial and should be considered aggressive, particularly as it matures. It may tolerate robust tankmates in a spacious aquarium but can intimidate or injure smaller, timid, or slower-moving fish. Suitable companions include appropriately sized tangs, larger angelfish, rabbitfish, robust wrasses, groupers, and other confident marine fish capable of holding their own without provoking constant conflict. Use significant caution with other triggerfish. Keeping multiple territorial trigger species requires considerably more aquarium volume, numerous secure territories, and careful species selection. A single Boomerang Triggerfish is the most predictable arrangement for most home aquariums. Small fish that could potentially be viewed as prey should be avoided. Reef Compatibility The Boomerang Triggerfish is not considered reef safe. Although healthy corals may not always be its primary target, its natural feeding behavior places a broad range of reef invertebrates at significant risk. Shrimp, crabs, hermit crabs, snails, clams, sea urchins, worms, and other crustaceans or mollusks may be hunted, crushed, or eaten. Sessile invertebrates may also be investigated or damaged during normal feeding and exploratory behavior. For predictable long-term care, this species is best maintained in a fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium rather than a traditional reef system. Water Parameters Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH Stable conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers. Maintain consistent temperature and salinity along with strong oxygenation, efficient biological filtration, and regular aquarium maintenance. Common Considerations Territorial adult behavior: Mature specimens can become assertive and should be paired only with appropriately robust tankmates. Invertebrate predator: Crabs, shrimp, snails, clams, urchins, worms, and similar reef animals may become prey. Powerful teeth: Offer a varied diet that periodically includes appropriate hard or shell-on marine foods. Secure aquascaping: Rockwork and decorations should be firmly positioned because triggerfish may rearrange unsecured objects. Strong feeding response: Use adequate filtration and nutrient export to accommodate the waste produced by a well-fed adult.
