Boom Chocolatta Meadow Geranium

Boom Chocolatta Meadow Geranium (Geranium pratense 'Boom Chocolatta')Boom Chocolatta Meadow Geranium brings a rich, dark foliage tone to the garden and layers it with waves of blue-purple flowers for months of color. The upright, mounded habit makes it easy to tuck into borders where it adds contrast without taking over. It is a dependable perennial for mixed plantings, offering a long bloom season and a polished look with minimal fuss. Plant it where you want dramatic leaf color, steady flowering, and a plant that helps everything around it look more intentional. Distinctive FeaturesThis cranesbill geranium is prized for its deep bronze to chocolate-toned, lobed leaves that hold strong color from spring through the growing season, especially in sunnier sites. Above the foliage, open, veined flowers in blue to blue-purple shades bloom from late spring into summer, often with repeat flowering later if the plant is trimmed after the first flush. The overall form is upright and mounded, creating a full clump that reads clean and structured in the border. It also attracts pollinators and is often less appealing to deer and rabbits than many flowering perennials. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best foliage color and bloom in full sun and light afternoon shade helpful in hotter areas. Soil: Well-drained, average garden soil, and it tolerates a range of soil types as long as drainage is good. Water: Medium moisture, keeping soil evenly moist during establishment and watering during dry stretches for best flowering. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 4 to 8. Drainage: Avoid persistently wet soils to reduce crown stress and keep the clump vigorous. Airflow: Provide spacing for airflow to support cleaner foliage and a longer-lasting planting. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant in a front or mid-border pocket where the dark foliage can frame the blue-purple blooms as a bold, season-long highlight. Border Contrast: Pair with green-leaved perennials and ornamental grasses to create strong color contrast and depth. Mass Planting: Use in drifts to build a broad band of dark foliage and repeated blue flowers across the bed. Containers: Grow in large pots to showcase the foliage color up close and keep flowers at eye level. Pollinator Beds: Include in sunny plantings to support bees while keeping the border looking tidy and full. Low Maintenance Care Shearing: Trim the plant back after the first main bloom to refresh foliage and encourage repeat flowering. Watering: Water during extended drought to prevent stress and keep bloom production strong. Feeding: Fertilize lightly in spring if needed, because overly rich soil can reduce flowering and loosen growth. Cleanup: Remove tired leaves and spent stems to keep the clump neat and improve airflow. Division: Divide every few years if the center thins or if you want to manage size and spread. Why Choose Boom Chocolatta Meadow Geranium? Dark Foliage: Chocolate-bronze leaves add depth and contrast that makes neighboring plants look brighter. Long Bloom Season: Blue to blue-purple flowers bloom from late spring into summer, with repeat flowering possible after trimming. Garden Structure: Upright, mounded habit keeps borders looking clean and intentional without constant shaping. Mature Size: Typically grows about 24 to 26 inches tall and 28 to 30 inches wide. Deer and Rabbit: Often considered deer and rabbit resistant, though browsing pressure can vary by location. If you want a perennial that delivers both standout foliage and a long run of flower color, Boom Chocolatta Meadow Geranium is a strong choice. Plant it in sun to part shade with good drainage, keep moisture steady while it establishes, and shear after the first flush for the best repeat show. It will settle into a reliable clump that adds contrast, pollinator value, and season-long polish to the landscape.
