Blue Sumatra

Blue Sumatra Chicken At The Chicken Coop Company, we proudly offer the striking Blue Sumatra chicken. This breed is distinguished by its elegant blue-tinted plumage, long, flowing tail, and multiple spurs on its legs. These traits, combined with their regal posture, make them a stunning addition to any flock. Originating from the Island of Sumatra, these chickens are not just ornamental but are also a rare and prized breed in the U.S. The Blue Sumatra was officially recognized by the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection in 2002. Due to their rarity, only a few breeders across the United States specialize in this beautiful breed. Our breeding program produces three unique color variations: black, blue, and splash, although we only ship the blue variety. Their offspring, however, will still inherit the range of shades. With their history, beauty, and unique traits, the Blue Sumatra chicken is an excellent choice for both chicken enthusiasts and breeders. Place your order today and feel free to contact The Chicken Coop Company if you need any further details or assistance. Health and Care: Hardy and Resilient: The Blue Sumatra is a generally hardy breed. They are well-suited for warm climates due to their slender body and relatively small size. However, their smaller frame can make them more susceptible to cold weather, so extra care should be taken in colder climates by providing adequate shelter and protection from the elements. Disease Resistance: Sumatra chickens, including the Blue Sumatra, are generally healthy and disease-resistant. They tend to be robust and well-adapted to free-range environments, but they still require regular care, including a clean coop, proper nutrition, and access to fresh water. Feather Care: Due to their slender body and light feathering, Blue Sumatras do not require as much grooming as some other breeds. However, it’s important to monitor for parasites like mites or lice, as these can affect the bird’s health if not treated promptly. Regular inspections of their plumage and living environment are necessary. Egg Laying: Moderate Egg Production: Blue Sumatras are moderate egg layers, producing about 150-200 eggs per year. While they are not the most prolific egg layers compared to some other breeds, their eggs are of good quality. Small White Eggs: The eggs they produce are typically small and white. Although their egg size may not be as large as other breeds, the quality and consistency of their eggs make them a valuable source of eggs for small-scale egg production. Seasonal Laying: Like many chicken breeds, egg production may slow down in the winter months when there is less daylight. However, with proper lighting and care, Blue Sumatras can continue laying through the colder months. Temperament: Active and Independent: The Blue Sumatra chicken is known for being active and independent. They are not as docile or calm as some other ornamental breeds and can sometimes be more flighty or nervous. They are excellent foragers and enjoy being able to roam freely in search of food. Alert and Guarding: Due to their active nature, they are highly alert and can be excellent at guarding the yard from predators. Their independent nature means they may not always be as affectionate as other breeds, but they will usually get along with other chickens, especially if they are raised together from a young age. Sociable with Other Birds: Despite their independent nature, Blue Sumatras are generally social and get along well with other chickens. They are typically not aggressive and are peaceful in a flock environment. Appearance: Striking Blue Plumage: The Blue Sumatra’s most distinctive feature is its blue-gray plumage, which has a unique shine or sheen that gives it a stunning look. The color ranges from a soft dove blue to a darker slate, and their feathers can often have a slightly iridescent appearance, making them one of the most visually striking chicken breeds. Slender and Elegant Build: Blue Sumatras have a slender, elegant body, which contributes to their graceful, ornamental appearance. They are a medium-sized breed and tend to have a long, narrow body with long legs. Sleek and Shiny Feathers: The feathers of the Blue Sumatra are sleek, soft, and fine in texture. They have a very polished appearance that enhances their elegant look. Their smooth and shiny feathers are one of the reasons they are so highly prized by poultry enthusiasts. Crested Head: Blue Sumatras have a small, upright comb, often with some additional feathering around the head. Their long, slender tail feathers also add to their overall beauty and elegance.
