Blue Shag Eastern White Pine

Blue Shag Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus 'Blue Shag')Blue Shag Eastern White Pine is a compact evergreen shrub that brings soft texture and cool color to the landscape year-round. Its naturally dense, rounded habit makes it easy to add structure to foundation beds and mixed borders without needing frequent pruning. The blue-green needles create a calm, refined look that pairs well with flowering shrubs and bold perennials. If you want a small conifer that stays tidy and delivers four-season value, Blue Shag is a strong choice. Distinctive FeaturesThis dwarf white pine forms a dense, rounded mound with soft, blue-green needles that give it a plush, inviting texture. Growth is slow and compact, making it easy to place in smaller gardens and tighter foundation spaces. The fine needle texture provides a gentle contrast to broadleaf evergreens and adds visual depth in mixed plantings. Because it holds color and form through winter, it works as a reliable evergreen anchor when other plants fade. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with more sun supporting denser growth and better color. Soil: Well-drained soil is best, and slightly acidic soils are a great match. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide deep watering during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: Zones 3 to 7. Mature Size: Typically grows about 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide over time. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a small bed where the soft blue-green mound can be appreciated year-round. Foundation Plantings: Add compact evergreen structure along the home without blocking windows. Mixed Shrub Borders: Use as a low evergreen anchor among flowering shrubs and perennials. Conifer Gardens: Pair with dwarf conifers to build a collection of contrasting textures and forms. Rock and Gravel Beds: Combine with boulders and gravel mulch for a clean, low-maintenance look. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep evenly moist the first season, then water during drought to maintain vigor. Mulching: Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch off the stems. Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead tips and refine shape if needed. Spacing: Give room for spread so the plant can maintain a natural, rounded outline. Site Selection: Provide good drainage and avoid low areas where water collects around the roots. Why Choose Blue Shag Eastern White Pine?
