Appearance: Feather Color: The defining feature of the Blue Old English Game Bantam is its beautiful blue plumage. Unlike the more common solid black or red varieties, the blue coloring in this breed gives it a striking and elegant appearance. The blue feathers can range from light silvery-blue to darker, almost slate-like shades, often with a metallic sheen. The blue coloring is especially vibrant in the sunlight and adds a distinct visual appeal to the bird. Body Type: The Blue Old English Game Bantam has a slender, athletic build typical of game birds. They are small, compact, and muscular, reflecting the breed's energetic nature and agility. The breed is designed for movement, with a lightweight body that allows for quick, agile movements. Tail: Like other Old English Game Bantams, the Blue variety features a high, upright tail that is carried elegantly. The tail feathers are long and sweeping, contributing to the bird’s graceful and regal appearance. This upright tail is one of the breed’s most distinctive traits. Comb and Wattles: They have a small, single comb, which is upright and proportional to the bird’s size. The comb is typically red, and the wattles are small but vibrant, adding contrast against the bird’s blue plumage. Legs and Toes: The Blue Old English Game Bantam has clean yellow legs and typically three toes on each foot, consistent with most bantam breeds. Their legs are relatively short compared to their body size, but they are sturdy and well-built for their active nature. Temperament: Active and Spirited: The Blue Old English Game Bantam, like all Old English Game Bantams, is highly energetic and active. These chickens are agile and love to forage, explore, and scratch around. They have a lively and spirited nature, which is a reflection of their game bird ancestry. Independent and Courageous: Game birds tend to be independent, and the Blue Old English Game Bantam is no exception. While they are not usually aggressive, they are courageous and confident, which can make them a bit more territorial or dominant compared to more docile breeds. This makes them a better choice for experienced chicken keepers who can manage their lively and sometimes dominant personalities. Good for Free-Range: These bantams thrive in free-range environments where they have plenty of space to roam and forage. They are very active and capable of short flights, so a secure enclosure is essential to keep them safe and prevent them from flying away. Not Ideal for Small Flocks: Due to their spirited nature, they may not be the best choice for small flocks or those with more docile breeds. They are often dominant and might compete for the top spot in a flock, especially with other active or game breeds. Egg Laying: Moderate Egg Production: Like most Old English Game Bantams, the Blue Old English Game Bantam is not known for prolific egg production. They typically lay small white eggs, about 2-3 eggs per week. The eggs they produce are small but high in quality and taste. Egg Size and Quality: The eggs are small, which is typical for bantam breeds, but they are known for their excellent flavor. While egg production is lower than that of more commercial layers, the eggs they do lay are prized for their freshness and taste. Health and Care: Hardy: Blue Old English Game Bantams are generally hardy chickens that adapt well to a variety of climates. However, due to their small size and single comb, they may be more susceptible to frostbite in cold climates. Extra protection, like a warm, dry shelter, should be provided in harsh weather. Low Maintenance: These bantams are relatively low-maintenance. They don’t require special grooming, though regular checks for parasites (such as mites or lice) should be done. Their sleek feathers are easy to manage, and they are generally healthy and resilient. Flight Risk: As with many bantam breeds, the Blue Old English Game Bantam is capable of short flights. They need a secure pen or yard to prevent them from flying over low fences. Because they are so active, they are excellent foragers, but they can also be vulnerable to predators, so a secure enclosure is important. Show and Ornamental Qualities: Poultry Shows: The Blue Old English Game Bantam is often shown in poultry competitions due to its unique and beautiful blue plumage. The breed's elegance, combined with its active and agile nature, makes it a popular choice among poultry enthusiasts and show participants. Ornamental Value: Besides their presence in shows, the Blue Old English Game Bantam is often kept for ornamental purposes. Their unique blue feathers, graceful tail, and spirited personality make them a prized addition to any ornamental flock. Frequently Asked Questions:  What is a Blue Old English Bantam?
