Blue Moon Bee Balm

Blue Moon Bee Balm (Monarda 'Blue Moon')Blue Moon Bee Balm (Monarda 'Blue Moon') is a compact, summer-blooming perennial that brings cool lavender-blue flower color and strong pollinator activity to sunny borders in a tidy, easy-to-place size. Its dense habit stays neat and rounded, making it ideal for smaller gardens, front-of-border plantings, and pathside beds where you want bold color and movement without the height and spread of taller monardas. When it blooms, the tufted flower clusters add lively texture and draw bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds into the garden. With aromatic foliage and a long seasonal presence, Blue Moon Bee Balm makes an excellent focal point in smaller planting areas where you want color, motion, and pollinator energy. Distinctive FeaturesThe standout feature is the cool-toned bloom color paired with a compact form, offering a softer palette option while still delivering classic bee balm impact. Flowers have the signature firework look that adds texture and an informal cottage-garden feel, but the plant stays dense and well-shaped through the season. The foliage is aromatic when brushed, adding a sensory layer along walkways and near patios. With good sun, consistent moisture, and airflow, it performs reliably and keeps the planting looking fresh through summer. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade; best flowering in full sun. Soil: Moist, well-drained soil with good organic matter; adaptable but performs best with consistent moisture. Water: Moderate; water during dry spells, especially in the first season and during bloom. USDA Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9. Habit: Compact, mounded perennial with upright flowering stems. Mature Size: About 12 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use in small drifts where the lavender-blue blooms can cool down the palette and draw attention in summer. Pollinator Gardens: A strong nectar source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in sunny plantings. Front of Border: Compact size keeps flowers visible and lets you layer taller plants behind it. Pathside Planting: Aromatic foliage and active bloom clusters add energy along walkways and patio edges. Cottage and Mixed Perennial Beds: Pairs well with coneflowers, salvias, ornamental grasses, and other summer perennials. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep evenly moist during establishment; water during drought for best flowering and foliage quality. Mulching: Apply a light mulch layer to conserve moisture, keeping mulch off the crown. Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage continued flowering and keep the plant looking tidy. Airflow: Space plants to allow good air movement and reduce foliage issues in humid weather. Cutback: Cut back stems after flowering or in late fall to refresh the clump for next season. Division: Divide every few years if clumps become crowded to maintain vigor and bloom density. Why Choose Blue Moon Bee Balm?
