Blue Cochin Bantam

Blue Cochin Bantam Chicken The Cochin Bantam is a beloved breed with a rich history, first brought to England in the 1860s by soldiers returning from China. Originally called “Pekin” bantams, these gentle birds are still known as "Pekins" in many parts of Europe. Characterized by their dense feathering that extends down their shanks and toes, they have a unique, fluffy appearance that makes them seem larger than they are. Known for their calm temperament and excellent brooding abilities, Cochins are easy to care for and require minimal space, making them perfect for backyard flocks. They are a true visual delight and are available in various beautiful colors, including a rare blue shade that ranges from light bluish tones to deep, black-laced dark blue. Cochins are the most popular feather-legged bantams and are among the best setters. Explore the stunning colors of our Blue Cochin chicks for a truly unique addition to your flock! Health and Care: Hardy and Resilient: The Blue Cochin Bantam is a hardy breed, able to adapt to both cold and moderate climates. Due to their dense feathering, they are well-protected in cold weather. However, in hot climates, they may require extra care to avoid overheating, as their thick plumage can lead to heat stress. Providing shade and plenty of fresh water during the summer months is important. Disease Resistance: Cochin Bantams, including the Blue Cochin, are generally healthy and disease-resistant. However, like all chickens, they can be susceptible to external parasites like mites and lice, particularly due to their thick feathering. Regular feather inspections and proper coop hygiene will help maintain their health. Low Maintenance: These bantams are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to their care. They require a balanced diet, fresh water, and a clean and dry living space. Due to their fluffy, dense feathers, it’s important to check them regularly for dirt buildup and groom them when necessary. Egg Laying: Moderate Egg Production: The Blue Cochin Bantam is not known for prolific egg production, as it is primarily valued for its ornamental and companion qualities. However, they are still reliable layers, producing around 150-180 small brown eggs per year. They are a good choice for people looking for steady egg production in small quantities. Seasonal Laying: Like many chickens, egg production can slow down during the winter months when there are fewer daylight hours. Providing supplemental lighting in the coop during the winter can help maintain egg production, but it will still not match the output of more commercial breeds. Small Brown Eggs: The eggs produced by the Blue Cochin Bantam are small and brown in color. While they may not be as large as those of other breeds, they are perfect for personal consumption or small households. Temperament: Docile and Friendly: One of the standout qualities of the Blue Cochin Bantam is its gentle, calm, and affectionate nature. These chickens are known for being very friendly and easy to handle, making them ideal for families, children, and first-time chicken keepers. They are generally non-aggressive and enjoy interacting with their owners. Sociable: The Blue Cochin Bantam is highly sociable and gets along well with other chickens. They are peaceful and non-confrontational, making them ideal for mixed-flock settings. They are not likely to engage in aggressive behavior and are generally tolerant of other breeds. Less Active: While they are friendly and affectionate, the Blue Cochin Bantam tends to be less active than other breeds. They are not known for being great foragers or runners, but they are happy to roam in a secure, free-range area. They tend to enjoy a slower pace of life and are content to stay close to their coop or resting area. Appearance: Stunning Blue Plumage: The Blue Cochin Bantam is known for its beautiful blue coloration, which gives the bird a soft, elegant look. The blue feathers can vary in shade from a pale slate-blue to a deeper, more solid blue, often with a slightly iridescent sheen. The soft blue plumage, combined with the bird's fluffy appearance, makes them one of the most striking ornamental bantams. Fluffy, Round Appearance: The Blue Cochin Bantam has a full-bodied, round shape that gives them a fluffy, almost "ball-like" appearance. Their dense feathering, especially around the body and legs, adds to their adorable and charming look. The bird’s fluffy feathers make it appear larger than it actually is, adding to its charm. Medium Build: The Blue Cochin Bantam is a medium-sized bantam, with hens typically weighing around 1-1.5 pounds and roosters weighing about 1.5-2 pounds. Their size makes them suitable for smaller spaces, but they still need enough room to move around comfortably due to their larger, round build. Feathered Legs and Feet: Like all Cochin Bantams, the Blue Cochin has feathered legs and feet, which adds to their charming and fluffy appearance. The feathers on their legs help to further accentuate their round, soft appearance, but they may need occasional cleaning, especially in wet conditions, to prevent dirt from accumulating. Small Comb and Wattles: The Blue Cochin Bantam has a small, single comb, which is typically red in color, along with small wattles. These features contrast nicely with their soft, blue plumage and give them a gentle, refined look. Bright Eyes and Alert Expression: Despite their fluffy exterior, the Blue Cochin Bantam has bright, expressive eyes. Their alert expression reflects their natural curiosity and interest in their surroundings. They are attentive but not overly skittish, making them easy to handle and interact with.
