Walnut Black Native

Native Black Walnut, commonly known as Eastern Black Walnut, is a majestic, long-lived native hardwood tree prized both for its rich, gourmet nut crop and its exceptionally valuable, dark timber. Forming a massive, open, rounded canopy supported by a tall, straight central trunk, Black Walnut features thick, dark brown-to-black bark with distinctive deep, diamond-shaped furrows. Its large, pinnately compound leaves measure up to two feet in length, consisting of thirteen to twenty-three finely serrated leaflets that emit a sharp, spicy scent when crushed. In spring, the tree produces drooping green male catkins alongside small female flower clusters, which are wind-pollinated to produce large, round green fruits. By autumn, these fleshy husks ripen and darken, encasing a hard, deeply grooved shell filled with an intensely flavorful, oily walnut kernel. In native woodlands, large acreage properties, and timber plantations, Native Black Walnut reaches a mature height and spread of fifty to seventy-five feet (or over one hundred feet in dense forest conditions). Beyond its historical role in high-end woodworking and furniture making, it serves as a critical keystone species for wildlife, supplying high-fat nuts for squirrels, jays, and small mammals while hosting over 130 species of native caterpillars. The gathered nuts offer a distinctively bold, earthy flavor higher in protein than Persian (English) walnuts, making them a gourmet ingredient for baking, ice creams, and wild food foraging. Scientific Name Juglans nigra (Eastern Black Walnut) Foliage: Deciduous Deciduous hardwood tree; massive, open, rounded canopy with a grand, straight central trunk. Leaves: Alternately arranged, pinnately compound leaves (12–24 inches long) with 13–23 lance-shaped, serrated leaflets; yellowish-green foliage with a spicy, aromatic scent when crushed; turns dull yellow in early autumn. Flowers: Monoecious (separate male and female flowers on the same tree); male flowers appear as drooping green catkins (2–4 inches long), female flowers appear in small clusters at twig tips in spring. Fruit: Large, round drupe-like fruits (2 inches wide) consisting of a thick, fleshy, semi-woody green husk that turns blackish-brown as it matures in autumn. Seeds: Hard, deeply grooved, corrugated dark brown nut shell containing a rich, oily, intensely flavored edible kernel (walnut). Bark: Thick, dark brown-to-black bark featuring deep, diamond-shaped furrows and sharp ridges on mature trunks. Life Span: Perennial 150–250+ years Mature Height 50–75 ft (Can reach 100+ ft in dense forest conditions) Mature Width (Spread) 50–75 ft Growth Rate Moderate to Fast (1–2 ft per year in favorable soils) USDA Zone / Chill Hours Zones 4a–9b (Extremely cold-hardy down to -30°F to -25°F / -34°C to -31°C); Requires ~400–1,000 winter chill hours for proper spring leaf-out and fruit set PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS Light Requirements: Full Sun (Requires 6–8+ hours of direct sunlight daily; highly shade-intolerant). Water Requirements: Moderate; requires consistent soil moisture while young, becoming moderately drought-tolerant once established. Drought Resistance: Moderate to High once fully established (Deep taproot system draws moisture from deep soil layers). Soil Type: Thrives in deep, rich, moist, well-drained loams; pH 6.0–7.5; produces juglone (an allelopathic biochemical) in roots, leaves, and husks that inhibits growth of sensitive plants like tomatoes, apples, and azaleas. Deer Resistance: High (Aromatic oils, tough leaves, and juglone content deter deer and livestock). Pest / Disease Resistance: High natural resistance to major pests; susceptible to Walnut Caterpillars, Webworms, and Thousand Cankers Disease (Geosmithia morbida). Pollination: Wind-pollinated (Self-fertile, but planting multiple trees significantly improves nut yield) Harvest: Harvest fallen nuts in early autumn (September to October) before husks decay or turn completely soft and black; hull immediately after gathering. Yield: Heavy; mature trees produce 50–150+ lbs of hulled nuts biennially (tends to bear heavily every other year). Storage / Shelf Life: In-shell cured walnuts store for 1–2 years in a cool, dry place; shelled nutmeats keep for 6 months in the refrigerator or up to 2 years frozen. Pruning: Prune in late autumn or winter while fully dormant to establish a strong central leader and remove low branches. Avoid spring pruning, as trees will "bleed" sap excessively.
