Black Swedish Ducks

Black Swedish Ducks The Black Swedish Duck is a striking breed that resembles a duck in a tuxedo with its dark black feathers and distinctive white “bib” running from under the bill to halfway down its chest. This breed also has some white on its wings, adding to its unique appearance. Known for being hardy and great foragers, Swedish ducks are well-suited for various climates. Drakes typically weigh around six pounds, while hens reach about five pounds. Hens lay primarily white eggs, occasionally producing blue or gray-tinted ones. Appearance: Feather Color: Black Swedish Ducks have dark, glossy black feathers with a slight iridescence that can appear blue or green depending on the light. They are super pretty when they shine in the sun. Males (drakes) are darker, females (hens) may have some shading variations but both sexes have that beautiful dark plumage. Body Type: Black Swedish Ducks are medium sized with a well proportioned body that is compact but sturdy. They have a deep broad chest and strong legs, good for meat production and foraging. Not as big as some meat ducks like the Pekin but still a good yield for small scale farming. Head and Beak: They have a slightly rounded head with a small orange or yellow beak that contrasts beautifully with their black feathers. The beak is strong for foraging for insects and plants. Legs and Feet: Their legs are orange or yellow and strong, supporting the body as they move around. The webbed feet are good for swimming and the legs are suitable for their active lifestyle whether foraging on land or swimming in water. Size: Black Swedish Ducks are medium sized. Males (drakes) weigh 6-7 lbs, females (hens) 5-6 lbs. Good size for small farms, homesteads and backyard flocks, good balance of egg production and meat yield. Temperament: Calm and Friendly: One of the best features of the Black Swedish Duck is their calm and docile temperament. They are friendly and social, great for families or new to raising ducks. Not too loud and easy to handle, good for small space or small farms. Curious and Social: Black Swedish Ducks are naturally curious and love to explore. They are social birds and get along with other ducks and poultry, even chickens. Friendly nature makes them a great addition to any mixed flock. Good for Free-Range: Black Swedish Ducks are well suited for free-range systems where they can forage and express themselves. They love to forage for insects, plants and small critters, great for pest control in gardens and fields. But they can also be kept in pens or coops as long as they have enough space to move around and access to water. Less Noisy: Compared to other duck breeds, Black Swedish Ducks are relatively quiet, great for those living in suburban areas or where noise is an issue. Their quacking is soft and they are quieter than other breeds like Indian Runners or Muscovies. Egg Production: Moderate Layers: Black Swedish Duck is a reliable layer but not as prolific as breeds like Khaki Campbell. Females will lay around 150-200 eggs per year. Eggs are white and medium size, sometimes slightly off white. Egg Quality: Eggs from Black Swedish Duck are known for their rich flavor and are often preferred for baking and cooking. Duck eggs in general have higher fat content than chicken eggs which gives them a creamier texture and richer flavor. Great for recipes that require eggs with fuller flavor like baking or making custards. Consistent Layers: While not the highest layers compared to other breeds, Black Swedish Ducks will provide a steady supply of eggs throughout the year, especially during warmer months. They may slow down during winter but will resume laying when days start to get longer again. Health and Care: Hardy and Resilient: Black Swedish Ducks are hardy. They can tolerate cold and warm temperatures as long as they have shelter. Their thick feathers keep them warm in cooler weather and they are generally disease resistant compared to other breeds. Low Maintenance: These ducks are relatively low maintenance compared to other poultry. They thrive on high quality duck feed, supplemented with fresh greens, grains and natural forage. Fresh water for drinking and bathing is essential to their overall health and well-being. Health Issues: Like all ducks, Black Swedish Duck can be prone to common duck diseases such as coccidiosis and duck viral enteritis. Regular health checks and clean living environment is essential to keep them healthy. They also need protection from external parasites like mites, lice and fleas which can be managed with regular inspections and proper care. Housing: Space: Black Swedish Ducks need space to move around. Whether free-range or in a pen, they should have room to forage. If in a pen, they should have enough space to accommodate their active lifestyle. Clean Water: Ducks are aquatic animals and Black Swedish Duck is no exception. They need access to clean water for drinking, bathing and keeping their feathers in good condition. A pond, kiddie pool or other shallow water source is ideal for them to swim and clean themselves. Protection from Predators: Since Black Swedish Duck is calm and docile, it can be vulnerable to predators especially at night. A secure coop with strong fencing is essential to protect them from predators like raccoons, foxes and birds of prey. Show and Ornamental: Poultry Shows: Black Swedish Duck is occasionally shown in poultry shows due to its beautiful plumage and calm temperament. It is popular in utility and heritage breed categories where its dual purpose capabilities - meat and egg production - are appreciated. Ornamental Value: Beyond its practicality, Black Swedish Duck is also valued for its beauty. Its glossy iridescent feathers and gentle nature makes it a lovely addition to any flock. Not as flashy as other ornamental breeds but adds a touch of elegance to any farm or garden. Frequently Asked Questions:  Is the Black Swedish Duck a rare breed?
