Black Scallop Bugleweed

Black Scallop Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop')Black Scallop Bugleweed is a low-growing perennial that brings bold foliage color and fast groundcover value to the landscape with very little effort. Its glossy near-black leaves create strong contrast in borders, under shrubs, between stepping stones, and along the front of beds where a darker accent can sharpen the whole planting. Because it stays compact while still spreading into a dense carpet, it is especially useful in smaller spaces where many groundcovers can become too loose or unruly. This is a strong choice for gardeners who want long-lasting foliage interest, spring flower color, and an easy plant that helps cover bare ground with style. Distinctive FeaturesThis evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial forms a dense, ground-hugging mat of glossy, scalloped leaves in deep burgundy to near-black tones. In mid to late spring, short spikes of deep blue to violet-blue flowers rise just above the foliage, creating a vivid contrast against the dark leaves. Compared to many other ajugas, it tends to stay more compact and spread more slowly, which gives it a tidier, more controlled look in the garden. The combination of dramatic foliage and low spring bloom makes it especially valuable for edging, massing, and adding contrast in mixed plantings. Growing Conditions Sun: Plant in full sun to full shade, with the darkest foliage color usually developing in more sun and cooler conditions. Soil: Provide average, well-drained soil, though it adapts to a range of garden soils if drainage is reasonable. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then maintain average supplemental watering during dry periods. Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 10. Mature Size: Reaches about 3 to 6 inches tall and 8 to 10 inches wide, spreading gradually over time. Habit: Grows in a compact, low, spreading mat-forming habit. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use it as a focal point at the front of a border or in a small bed where the near-black foliage can create strong contrast against lighter green or golden plants. Groundcover: Mass it where a dense, colorful groundcover is needed to cover bare soil and reduce visual gaps. Border Edging: Plant it along walks and garden edges where its compact habit can define spaces clearly. Rock Gardens: Use it in rock gardens where its low growth and glossy foliage can soften stone and add color. Containers: Add it to mixed containers where the dark foliage can spill slightly and sharpen the overall planting design. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry periods if needed. Cleanup: Remove winter-worn foliage in early spring to freshen the planting before new growth and flowers emerge. Spacing: Give plants enough room for airflow, since dense mats in damp conditions can benefit from better circulation. Division: Lift and divide clumps if needed to refresh older plantings or control spread. Placement: Avoid constantly soggy sites, because overly wet conditions can reduce long-term vigor. Why Choose Black Scallop Bugleweed? Dark Foliage: Its near-black glossy leaves bring strong contrast and season-long color to the garden. Spring Flowers: Deep blue flower spikes add another layer of color in mid to late spring. Compact Habit: Its lower, tidier growth makes it easier to use in smaller spaces and more detailed planting designs. Groundcover Value: It helps cover bare ground quickly while still looking polished and controlled. Flexible Light Tolerance: It performs in full sun, part shade, or full shade, which makes placement easier in many landscapes. Low Maintenance Appeal: Once established, it offers strong visual payoff with relatively little upkeep. Black Scallop Bugleweed is an easy way to add dramatic foliage, spring color, and dense groundcover value to the landscape without relying on a fussy perennial. Its compact form makes it especially useful where every plant needs to stay neat while still contributing strong contrast and coverage. With average moisture, decent drainage, and occasional cleanup, it offers dependable performance year after year. It is a practical perennial for adding texture, color depth, and a reliable focal point at ground level.
