Appearance: Feather Color: Black Rosecomb Bantams have deep, glossy black feathers that give them a sleek, shiny appearance. The black can have a greenish sheen when the light hits, which is common with black feathered breeds. The feathers are smooth and glossy which makes them look striking and refined. Body Type: They have a small but strong and well proportioned body. They are compact and small which makes them perfect for ornamental purposes. The body is round with a good posture which matches their elegant plumage and comb. Comb and Wattles: One of the most distinctive feature of the Black Rosecomb Bantam is the rose comb which is small, compact and sits close to the top of the head. The comb is rounded and has a rosey shape, unlike the single comb of other bantam breeds. The wattles are small and like the comb, they are red and provides a nice contrast to the dark feathers. Tail: The tail is moderately long and carried slightly upward. It has an elegant sweep to it and is often less dramatic than other bantam breeds but still looks nice. Legs and Toes: The legs are short, clean and yellow, typical for bantam breeds. They have three toes on each foot and their legs gives them a neat and balanced look. Temperament: Active and Spirited: Black Rosecomb Bantams are active and lively. They are active, agile and curious and always exploring their surroundings. They are perfect for free range environment where they can roam and show their natural instincts. Independent and Courageous: Rosecomb bantams, like other game bantams, are independent and courageous. They are not aggressive but will assert themselves in a flock. This breed has a bold and courageous nature so they can be a bit dominant in a flock so not ideal for mixed flocks with more docile breeds. Free Range: Black Rosecomb Bantams are good for free range. They love to forage and are active so they are perfect for larger open spaces. They may not be prolific layers but their agility and independent nature makes them suitable for environments where they can roam freely. Not for Small Flocks: Due to their independent and sometimes dominant nature, Black Rosecomb Bantams are better suited for larger, more active flocks where their energy and assertiveness will be balanced by other active birds. Egg Laying: Moderate Egg Production: Like most bantam breeds, Black Rosecomb Bantams are not known for prolific egg production. They lay small white eggs, about 2-3 eggs a week. They are not as high as commercial layers but the eggs are high quality and delicious. Egg Size and Quality: The eggs laid by Black Rosecomb Bantams are small as expected from a bantam breed. However, they are prized for their excellent flavor and freshness. These bantams are often kept more for ornamental purposes than for egg production. Health and Care: Hardy: Black Rosecomb Bantams are generally hardy chickens that can adapt to different climate. However, like most bantams, they may be more susceptible to cold due to their small size and single comb. In cold climate, it’s important to protect them from frostbite especially on their comb and wattles. Low Maintenance: These bantams are relatively low maintenance especially in terms of grooming. Their smooth, glossy feathers are easy to manage and they don’t require frequent grooming. Regular checks for parasites like mites or lice should be done and their living space should be kept clean and dry to prevent disease. Flight Risk: Like most bantams, Black Rosecomb Bantams can fly short distance due to their small size and agility. A secure pen or enclosure with high fence is necessary to keep them safely contained and protected from predators. Frequently Asked Questions:  What is a Black Rosecomb Bantam?
