Natural black opal is the rarest and most valuable variety of opal. Unlike white or milky opals, it features a dark body tone—ranging from deep gray to jet black. This dark base acts as a natural canvas that intensifies the stone's vibrant, shifting "play-of-color". Most varieties of black opal on the market get their dark color from heat treatments.
