When a Black Berkey filter is properly immersed in water and attached to the primer, the hand pump creates a pressure gradient that draws water into the center of the filter element. Once the filter is completely saturated, water passes through the primer and squirts out the opposite end—confirming successful priming. For purging, the same mechanism forces air through the filter in reverse, clearing accumulated debris from the pores.
