BioGuard Smart Shock is a fast-dissolving granular pool shock that does four jobs in a single application: it shocks, it oxidizes, it buffers, and it clarifies. Most weekly maintenance products handle one of those. Smart Shock was built to consolidate them, which is why it's the shock BioGuard specifies inside its own care system rather than a general-purpose add-on. The reason weekly shocking matters comes down to what chlorine actually does once it's in the water. Free chlorine binds to the organic material bathers bring in — perspiration, body oils, sunscreen, cosmetics, nitrogen compounds — and forms combined chlorine, or chloramines. Chloramines are the source of the sharp "chlorine smell" people associate with a heavily treated pool, along with red eyes and skin irritation. They are, ironically, evidence that a pool has too little effective sanitizer, not too much. Shocking drives the free chlorine level high enough to break those bonds apart and burn the combined chlorine out of the water. Smart Shock delivers 39% available chlorine from a stabilized dichlor base, and pairs it with distinctive blue copper crystals that add a genuine algaestatic component to the same dose. Where an ordinary shock kills bacteria and oxidizes waste, Smart Shock also puts a residual algae-fighting metal into the water at the same time. It dissolves on contact with no pre-mixing or bucket work required, and swimmers can return in as little as 15 minutes once free chlorine has settled back into the normal 1–4 ppm range. The practical result is a shorter maintenance routine. One broadcast application per week handles sanitation, oxidation, algae prevention, and water clarity, and it works across every pool surface type — plaster, vinyl liner, fiberglass, gunite, and painted. Pro Tip: Shock at dusk or after dark whenever you can. Unstabilized free chlorine breaks down rapidly under direct ultraviolet light, and shocking at noon on a bright July afternoon can burn off a meaningful share of the dose before it finishes its work on chloramines. Applying in the evening with the pump running overnight gives the chlorine eight to ten uninterrupted hours to oxidize at full strength. Brand BioGuard®
