BioGuard Skim Mor is a skimmer sock treated with MYCELX coating — and that coating is the entire reason it costs more than a generic skimmer sock and works better than one. An ordinary skimmer sock is a fine mesh bag. It strains water, catching small debris a skimmer basket lets through, and that's genuinely useful. But straining does nothing about oil. Sunscreen, body oils, hair products, cosmetics, and lotions don't behave like particles — they disperse and pass straight through mesh no matter how fine it is. That oil then travels to your filter, coats the media, and turns into a sticky binder that traps fine debris and blinds the surface. It's the single most common reason a cartridge or DE filter reads high pressure and won't come down after cleaning. MYCELX is an oil-capture technology that attracts and permanently binds hydrocarbons on contact. Instead of straining oil, the coated fabric grabs it and holds it. Combined with the mesh capturing pollen, fine silt, and small debris, Skim Mor intercepts both categories of contaminant at the skimmer — before either one reaches the filter. The payoff shows up in three places. Water looks clearer, because oils and fine particles that would otherwise dull it are removed. Waterline buildup slows down, because the oils that form the scum ring are being pulled out continuously. And your filter lasts longer and needs cleaning less often, because it isn't absorbing everything the skimmer used to pass along. They stretch to fit virtually all skimmer baskets, install in seconds, and replace every two weeks. A 5-pack covers roughly ten weeks — most of a swim season. Pro Tip: The economics here favor the sock, and by a wide margin. A cartridge filter element runs well over a hundred dollars to replace, and the fastest way to kill one is letting body oils build up in the pleats season after season until the media can't be recovered. Skim Mor intercepts that oil at the skimmer for a couple of dollars a sock. Even setting aside the clearer water, catching oil upstream of a filter you'd otherwise be replacing is one of the better returns available in pool maintenance — and it pairs naturally with degreasing the filter itself once or twice a season.
