Binello Fig Tree

The Binello Fig Tree is a unique variety from northern Italy, where it can be found growing wild among the olive groves of the picturesque Val di Magra region. Also known as the “Gallo Fig” or “Magra Valley Binello Fig,” this Italian variety gets its name from the word “Binello,” meaning “twins” — a fitting name because the figs have a tendency to grow in pairs along the branches. Binello is also reported to have excellent cold hardiness, making it an intriguing option for growers in cooler climates. Binello produces attractive figs with yellow skin and a pinkish-yellow interior. The fruit has a delicious honey-based flavor complemented by refreshing fruity notes, giving it more complexity than a traditional honey fig. Although Binello is often described as producing smaller fruit, our experience has been quite different. With consistent irrigation, our trees produce medium to large figs that are sweet, juicy, and incredibly enjoyable straight from the tree. In addition to its excellent flavor, the Binello Fig Tree brings a fascinating Italian heritage to any fig collection. Its combination of fruity honey flavor, unusual tendency to produce figs in pairs, and reported cold tolerance makes it a variety worth growing. While we haven't been able to put its cold hardiness to the test here in the Deep South, we've been impressed with its fruit size and eating quality under our growing conditions. If you're looking for a tasty and refreshing Italian fig with an interesting story behind it, the Binello Fig Tree is an excellent choice.
