Billy Strings – Home (2-LP Vinyl)

Explore the Beauty of Billy Strings – Home (2-LP Vinyl) Read our review of Billy Strings's Home from October 2019 on jambands.com. Released in September 2019, Home announced Billy Strings as more than just a bluegrass prodigy—this was a songwriter and bandleader creating progressive bluegrass that honored tradition while pushing it forward. Pressed on double vinyl, the album captures Billy's band at full power: crushing traditional material with authority while introducing originals that blend bluegrass instrumental virtuosity with jam band sensibilities. Produced by Glenn Brown and recorded primarily in Nashville, Home showcases the sound that would make Billy the next generation's standard-bearer for acoustic American music. The album opens with "Taking Water," establishing Billy's approach: traditional bluegrass instrumentation (acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, bass) arranged with progressive rock ambition, tempos that shift from breakneck to spacious, and lyrics that speak to contemporary concerns while maintaining bluegrass storytelling traditions. "Hollow Heart," "Watch It Fall," "Love and Regret," and the title track all became setlist staples, showcasing Billy's flatpicking technique and his ability to write songs that work both as vehicles for improvisation and as standalone compositions. The band's interplay throughout demonstrates the telepathic communication that only comes from constant touring. What makes Home significant is how it established Billy's voice as distinct within bluegrass—not just another young picker playing fast, but an artist with vision about where the music could go. The album earned a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album and introduced Billy to audiences beyond the festival circuit. This double LP pressing preserves the warmth and dynamics of the original recordings, allowing the acoustic instrumentation to reveal every detail that digital compression obscures. Double LP. Released September 2019. Grammy winner for Best Bluegrass Album. Produced by Glenn Brown.
