What both open-back studio headphones – the DT 990 PRO and the DT 990 PRO X – have in common is their outstanding spatial sound, excellent build quality, and application-optimized product design. Their high product quality is ensured by manufacturing in Germany. Thanks to their elevated treble response and impressive transparency, both models reveal acoustic inaccuracies and act as a sonic magnifying glass – making them the perfect complement to studio monitors during the production process. A key difference lies in the driver technology: The DT 990 PRO is available in multiple impedance versions (80 ohms & 250 ohms) to suit different usage scenarios. In contrast, the DT 990 PRO X features the modern STELLAR.45 driver with 48 ohms, allowing it to be used with a wide range of playback devices without compromising sound quality. The models also differ in terms of features: The DT 990 PRO has a fixed cable, while the DT 990 PRO X comes with a detachable 3-meter cable featuring a lockable mini-XLR connector. Additionally, the DT 990 PRO X offers improved wearing comfort. An integrated recess in the headband at the fontanelle area reduces pressure on sensitive spots at the top of the head. How does the DT 990 PRO X differ from the DT 900 PRO X? The DT 990 PRO X delivers the familiar sound signature of the DT 990 PRO (80 ohms) with emphasized highs and outstanding spatiality – ideal for revealing acoustic flaws during production. The DT 900 PRO X, on the other hand, offers an impressively linear and precise representation of the entire frequency spectrum, making it particularly suitable for mixing, mastering, and editing. The designs also differ: The DT 990 PRO X adopts the classic studio look of the original model, while the DT 900 PRO X features a distinct, modern appearance. Another difference lies in the included accessories: The DT 900 PRO X comes with two detachable straight cables (1.8 m and 3 m). The DT 990 PRO X includes a single detachable 3-meter cable. All cables feature a lockable mini-XLR connector for secure use in the studio. Which ear pads and acoustic filters are compatible with the DT 990 PRO X? Both the replacement ear pads EDT 990 V and EDT 990 VB are compatible with the DT 990 PRO X. Please note that the corresponding acoustic filters are not included with the ear pads and must be purchased separately. Is the DT 990 PRO X compatible with the PRO X digital cables? Yes, both the PRO X Lightning cable and the PRO X USB-C cable can be used with the DT 990 PRO X.
