Best Ghost Stories

6W Chosen by Anne Ridler. London: Faber & Faber, 1945 Notes Anne Ridler was an accomplished British poet, librettist, and editorial force whose elegant, sharp curation left an indelible mark on 20th-century anthologies. Born in Rugby and educated at King's College London, she built her foundational literary reputation working directly alongside T.S. Eliot at Faber and Faber during the tumultuous years of World War II. Celebrated for her precise, luminous poetry and her verse broadcasts for the BBC, Ridler possessed a deeply refined critical palate that she applied to selecting prose. Her approach to the supernatural was fundamentally intellectual; rather than hunting for cheap, gory jump-scares, she favored psychological subtlety, elegant atmosphere, and existential unease. Her behind-the-scenes prestige at Faber allowed her to secure and arrange premier fiction from the era's absolute greatest masters, establishing her as an essential arbiter of modern macabre curation. First published in 1945 under strict British "Book Production War Economy Standards," this anthology serves as a benchmark of modern supernatural literature. Ridler explicitly stated that her goal was to compile the absolute finest ghost stories written roughly within the preceding century, deliberately passing over over-anthologized tales to make a collection that was intensely readable and highly varied as a single narrative whole. The star-studded index features eighteen masterful stories spanning from classic 19th-century pioneers like Wilkie Collins, Sheridan Le Fanu, Henry James, and M.R. James, down to celebrated 20th-century modernists including Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, Algernon Blackwood, Saki, Elizabeth Bowen, and John Collier. Description Black cloth with gilt spine lettering. Striking typographic dust jacket designed by Margaret Wolpe. True first printings are highly uncommon due to the fragile, thin paper stock mandated by wartime rationing. Fine condition with just some minor chipping to points of dustwrapper and foxing to edges.
