bernette 38 Computerized Sewing Machine

As the top model in the 30 series, the bernette 38 sewing machine is designed for sewists who want more creative freedom without stepping into an overly complicated machine. Its computerized design opens the door to 394 built-in stitches, including 20 practical stitches for everyday sewing, giving you plenty of options for garment construction, quilting, and decorative details. Eight one-step buttonholes make finishing garments feel polished and professional, while three built-in alphabets let you add personalized labels, monograms, or simple wording to your projects. The memory function allows you to save stitch combinations, so favorite designs are always ready when inspiration strikes. An adjustable speed regulator displayed right on the screen gives you confident control over your stitching pace, while the start/stop button lets you sew without the foot control—making it easy to slow down for tricky corners or glide through long, precise seams with ease. Every feature is designed to support creativity while keeping sewing smooth and approachable. Sewing sessions stay comfortable and efficient thanks to a collection of thoughtful, customer-loved features. A bright LED sewing light clearly illuminates your work area, while the built-in needle threader takes the strain out of setup and thread changes. Both automatic and manual thread cutters help streamline your workflow, reducing interruptions and keeping your focus on the project at hand. With eight included presser feet, a sturdy hard cover for protection, and an extension table to support larger projects, the bernette 38 arrives ready to grow with you. It's a reliable, feature-rich machine that makes everyday sewing feel more enjoyable and confidently creative. LCD Display The LCD display on the bernette 38 keeps important sewing information clearly visible, helping you select and adjust stitches with confidence. The screen shows the chosen stitch along with recommended settings, allowing you to review stitch width, stitch length, and other key details before sewing begins. Front-panel buttons let you make adjustments easily, with updates shown instantly on the display so you always know exactly how the machine is set. This clear visual feedback is especially helpful when changing stitches or fine-tuning settings for different fabrics. By keeping everything visible and easy to manage, the LCD display helps streamline setup and keeps your attention on the quality of your stitching. Automatic Thread Cutter & Tie Off The automatic thread cutter and tie-off (auto lock) function helps deliver clean, secure finishes while saving time at the machine. Instead of manually backstitching to secure your work, the tie-off function neatly locks the stitches at the end of a seam with the touch of a button, helping prevent unraveling. Once your seam is complete, the automatic thread cutter trims threads instantly, so your project is ready to remove from the machine without reaching for scissors. This time-saving combination keeps your stitching looking polished while reducing unnecessary steps. Memory Function For Pattern Combinations The memory function on the bernette 38 lets you save custom pattern combinations for quick, consistent use on projects. Instead of reselecting stitches each time, you can combine decorative stitches, lettering, or functional elements and store them directly in the machine. When using the memory function with the mirror-image stitching feature, you can create stitch sequences that alternate or repeat mirrored designs, resulting in unique, eye-catching patterns. This is a great advantage when sewing borders, labels, or decorative rows that need precise repetition and symmetry. By keeping these customized stitch combinations ready to go, the memory function saves setup time while helping you achieve uniform, professional-looking results from start to finish. Mirror Image Stitching Mirror image stitching on the bernette 38 lets you reverse decorative stitch patterns horizontally, making it easy to create balanced, symmetrical designs. With a dedicated Mirror Image button on the front panel, stitches can be flipped directly on the machine without repositioning fabric or changing your sewing approach. This capability is ideal for quilt borders, mirrored embellishments, and decorative accents that need to align cleanly. When combined with the panel controls and stitch memory, mirror image stitching allows you to build and repeat complex decorative sequences with confidence. The result is smoother alignment, consistent symmetry, and a more polished finish across your projects. Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure The adjustable presser foot pressure on the bernette 38 allows you to fine-tune how firmly the presser foot holds your fabric as it feeds through the machine. By adjusting the pressure, you can achieve smoother results on a wide range of materials, from lightweight fabrics that need a gentler touch to thicker layers that require added stability. This control helps prevent fabric shifting, stretching, or puckering. The ability to adapt presser foot pressure to your fabric gives you better stitch quality and more consistent results across every type of project. Slide Speed Control and Start/Stop Button The slide speed control and start/stop button on the bernette 38 work together to give you precise control over how you sew. The slide speed control lets you set your preferred maximum sewing speed, making it easy to slow down for detailed stitching or speed up for long, continuous seams. To use the start/stop button, the foot control must be unplugged, allowing you to sew hands-free at the speed you’ve selected. This setup helps maintain a consistent pace, reduces fatigue during longer sessions, and provides added confidence when accuracy and control are essential. Extension Table The included extension table expands your sewing surface, giving you extra room to comfortably support larger projects. This added space helps keep fabric evenly supported around the needle, reducing drag and allowing stitches to form more consistently. It’s beneficial for quilting, garment construction, and long seams where the weight of the fabric can otherwise pull or shift as you sew. By keeping your project level and stable, the extension table improves accuracy and helps reduce fatigue during longer sewing sessions, making bigger projects feel more manageable and enjoyable. Top-Loading Drop-In Bobbin System The drop-in hook and bobbin system delivers a dependable, low-maintenance setup that supports smooth, consistent stitching. With this top-loading design, the bobbin is placed directly into the machine and guided along a clearly marked threading path, allowing you to get started quickly without handling a separate bobbin case. The transparent bobbin cover makes it easy to monitor thread levels, helping you avoid running out mid-seam. This style of hook system is known for producing balanced stitches and steady tension, even when switching between different fabrics or stitch types. It also reduces vibration and noise while sewing, contributing to a more comfortable, controlled sewing experience. Free-Arm Sewing Free-arm sewing on the bernette 38 makes working on smaller, hard-to-reach areas much easier. By removing the accessory box, the slim free arm is exposed, allowing fabric to slide smoothly around the needle area. This design is ideal for sewing tubular projects like sleeves, cuffs, pant hems, and children’s clothing where control and visibility matter. The free arm helps reduce fabric bunching and twisting, resulting in cleaner seams and more accurate stitching on detailed projects. Needle Stop Up/Down Using the needle stop up/down function gives you added control over how your machine finishes each stitch. With the touch of a button, you can choose whether the needle stops in the up position or remains down in the fabric when sewing pauses. Keeping the needle down is practical when pivoting at corners, sewing curves, or aligning fabric, as it holds your project securely in place. Setting the needle to stop up makes it easy to remove fabric or reposition your work between seams. This function allows you to tailor the machine's behavior to your sewing style, helping improve accuracy, efficiency, and overall stitch control. Twin-Needle Capability The bernette 38 has built-in capability for twin-needle sewing, making it a great option for creating clean, professional-looking parallel rows of stitching. When the double needle setting is activated, the machine automatically limits the stitch width to help prevent the needles from contacting the presser foot. This added protection reduces the risk of needle breakage while sewing hems, decorative details, or topstitching. By automatically managing stitch width, this machine lets you use double-needle techniques with greater confidence, helping safeguard both your project and the machine while delivering polished results. 394 Built In Stitches There is an impressive selection of 394 built-in sewing stitches designed to support both everyday sewing and creative exploration. Within this wide variety, you’ll find 20 practical stitches that handle essential tasks like seaming, hemming, and construction with reliable precision. Eight one-step buttonhole stitches make it easy to create clean, consistent buttonholes, while three built-in alphabets allow you to personalize projects with names, labels, or simple phrases. Stretch stitches are included for working confidently with elastics, jersey, and other knit fabrics, helping seams remain flexible and durable. For sewists who love embellishment, 67 decorative stitches offer beautiful options for adding flair. This thoughtfully curated stitch library ensures the bernette 38 is as capable for everyday sewing as it is inspiring for creative details.
