Tierpark Berlin, Crocodile

This gorgeous Tierpark Berlin poster captures the primal power of a crocodilian in mid-roar, jaws agape to reveal rows of gleaming teeth against a vivid pink maw. Created in the mid-1980s for East Berlin's beloved zoo, the image exemplifies the distinctive graphic design tradition that flourished in the German Democratic Republic, where institutional posters served as both advertising and public art. The composition balances naturalistic detail with bold graphic impact. The crocodile's textured scales, rendered in warm browns and tans, contrast dramatically with the soft teal water and tropical foliage framing the scene. Palm fronds and a monstera leaf evoke the creature's exotic origins, while the clean sans-serif typography anchors the design in its modernist moment. A standout piece for collectors of zoo posters, Cold War-era ephemera, or German graphic design, this poster carries historical resonance as an artifact from a divided Berlin, when the Tierpark stood as East Germany's proud counterpart to the West's Zoologischer Garten.
