Tierpark Berlin, Sumatran Tiger

This striking Tierpark Berlin poster showcases the Sumatran tiger in its full majesty, rendered with remarkable naturalistic detail by designer Reiner Zieger. The tiger stands alert on a rocky outcrop, its powerful form framed by delicate bamboo, capturing both the animal's raw power and the lush habitat of its Indonesian homeland. The composition draws the viewer into a direct encounter with one of nature's most endangered predators. Produced during the Cold War era when Berlin remained a divided city, this poster represents the artistic achievement of Tierpark Berlin, East Germany's answer to the historic zoo in the West. This was part of an educational poster series that captured a fascinating intersection of wildlife conservation awareness and Cold War-era institutional art. The fifth poster in the numbered series, it demonstrates the high production values the DDR devoted to its premier zoological institution, one of Europe's largest. The rich earth tones and careful botanical detail reflect the period's commitment to scientific accuracy in popular education. A compelling piece for collectors of zoo ephemera, wildlife art, or East German graphic design, this poster brings together natural history illustration traditions with mid-century poster aesthetics.
