Bent Back – FlySmithFlies

Bent Back – FlySmithFlies The Bent Back is a sleek, weed-resistant baitfish pattern tied by Pro Staff tyer Casey Smith of FlySmithFlies. Built on the Umpqua XS435 #1 hook, this fly rides hook-point up, allowing it to slip over grass, shell, and structure while still tracking straight with a smooth, natural push of water. The wing is crafted from a premium bucktail and synthetic blend, creating a long, tapered silhouette with controlled flash and a lifelike collapse on the pause. Each color option reflects proven forage patterns across the Gulf and Atlantic—mullet, glass minnows, pilchards, and small coastal baitfish. When the water is clear, the fish are pressured, or you’re sight-fishing in shallow marsh and bay systems, the Bent Back gives you a clean entry, subtle movement, and a profile that predators commit to without hesitation. Fish it slow with long pauses or give it short pops to imitate a fleeing baitfish. Why It Works Hook-point-up design reduces snagging in grass and oysters Tapered wing collapses naturally for a realistic breathing motion Flash is balanced to provide life without overpowering the profile Excels in shallow water and tough, high-pressure scenarios Target Species Redfish, Speckled Trout, Snook, Striped Bass, Juvenile Tarpon, and any predator hunting finfish on the flats.
