The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse

6C, Facsimile of the original manuscript Beatrix Potter. London, 1979. #424/500 Notes Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, and naturalist best known for her charming children’s books that combine precise observation of nature with gentle storytelling. Born in 1866, she had a deep interest in animals, plants, and the countryside, which strongly influenced her work. Potter wrote and illustrated more than twenty books, creating memorable characters such as Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck, and she later became a successful farmer and conservationist, helping to preserve large areas of the Lake District for future generations. The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse (1910) is one of Potter’s quieter, more domestic stories, focusing on a meticulous little wood mouse who lives in a carefully kept underground home. The plot centers on Mrs. Tittlemouse’s frustration when various untidy insect visitors invade her house, disrupting her sense of order. The story reflects Potter’s keen eye for small creatures and natural habitats, as well as her subtle humor and sympathy for characters who value cleanliness, routine, and peace. Nellie Warne was a close companion and trusted friend of Beatrix Potter during her adult life. Originally her dressmaker, Warne became Potter’s housekeeper, confidante, and eventual executor, living with her at Hill Top Farm and later at Castle Farm. Potter wrote many affectionate, illustrated letters to Nellie, and their relationship was marked by loyalty and mutual respect, with Warne providing practical support while Potter pursued her writing, farming, and conservation work.  Description Reproduction of the first manuscript draft of the tale, presented to Nellie Warne as a 1910 New Year's gift, dark green binding with gold tooling, excellent condition in a black cover box with mouse and butterfly on the front.
