Be Such — Marcus Aurelius Tee

Marcus Aurelius wrote Meditations entirely for himself — no audience, no publication, no legacy in mind. Book X, entry 16 ends not with reflection but with a command: stop arguing about what a good person looks like, and simply be one. Seventeen words that took a lifetime of philosophy to earn. Marcus Aurelius “No longer talk at all about the kind of man that a good man ought to be, but be such.” Aurelius wrote this in Meditations, X.16 — not for anyone else to read, but as a private note to himself. He had been Roman Emperor for years by then, sitting through councils and deliberations where people talked at length about what good leadership looked like, what virtue required, what a just man ought to do. He had apparently reached his limit. The entry is two sentences. The second one is: be such. The translation most widely shared online is Gregory Hays’s 2002 rendering — modern, punchy, under copyright. We went with George Long’s 1862 translation: older cadence, identical demand. The words changed. The instruction didn’t. If you’ve ever: Left a meeting about values early because you’d already decided what yours were Caught yourself in a long philosophical argument and realized the time would have been better spent acting Read Aurelius not as inspiration but as confirmation of something you already knew This is for you. The DesignThe interpuncts flanking ·BUT BE SUCH· and ·MARCUS AURELIUS· are not decoration: they are the same marks Roman stonecutters used to separate words in carved text. On the back of this tee four lines of preamble run above them unmarked, exactly as Aurelius wrote it: the long qualification then the point. The dots arrive only when the inscription reaches what matters. Wear it and you are carrying the whole argument, not just the conclusion. The tee doesn't ask. It just makes the question visible.
