Aurelius wrote this entry in Meditations as a private note to himself — not for publication, not for posterity. At some point during the campaigns, he had simply had enough of discussing what a good man ought to be. The entry is three words long. He moved on. Marcus Aurelius “No longer talk at all about the kind of man that a good man ought to be, but be such.” Aurelius wrote this entry in his private journal during the reign — not as public philosophy but as a note to himself. He had sat through enough discussion of what good men ought to do. He had apparently reached the end of that conversation. The entire instruction is three words: be such. The morning is a useful time to remember that. Before the inbox opens, before the day’s small compromises begin accumulating — there’s a moment where you can choose your actual orientation. This mug is for that moment. The DesignFour lines of preamble run above the command: long, unmarked, the full accumulation of qualifications. Then the mug delivers. ·BUT BE SUCH· arrives flanked by dots. ·MARCUS AURELIUS· closes it the same way. Both sides carry the full print. Left-handers see it. Right-handers see it. The command does not pick which hand holds it. Neither did Aurelius. Best read before the first sip. The order of operations matters. Your Morning Standard 15 oz — substantial. Not a collection piece. Glossy black ceramic — interpuncts and inscription in warm gold Two-sided print — the command faces you whether you reach left or right Dishwasher safe Microwave safe Who It’s For The person who uses the first quiet minutes of the day as an actual reset. Anyone who has spent enough time in discussions about virtue to know the discussion was never the point. The Stoic who picks up the mug and gets on with it. Start the day as yourself. Marcus Aurelius, in Plain English Lived: 121–180 AD — Roman Emperor for the last nineteen years of his life Wrote Meditations in Greek, for himself, in military camps during active campaigns — never intended for an audience; published centuries after his death Governed through the Antonine Plague (which killed millions), wars on the Danube and in the East, and a failed coup by one of his own generals — the Stoicism was a working practice, not a pose Considered the last of the Five Good Emperors; the empire began its long decline after his death
