Quick Facts: ABV: ~13.5%  |  Origin: Clarksburg, California  |  NV / Current Vintage  |  Winery: Herzog Wine Cellars Production & Heritage Herzog Wine Cellars has deep roots in the kosher winemaking tradition and operates out of Oxnard, California, sourcing its Chenin Blanc grapes from the Clarksburg appellation in the Sacramento River Delta — a region prized for cool breezes that preserve natural acidity in white varietals. In 2005, Herzog became the first winemaker in the United States, kosher or otherwise, to join the Lodi Rules certification program for sustainable winegrowing. That commitment to environmentally responsible viticulture carries through every vintage of this Chenin Blanc, which is certified Kosher for Passover and all year round under strict rabbinical supervision. Tasting Notes Aroma: Honeysuckle and white blossom lead, followed by ripe apricot and a subtle thread of gooseberry. The nose is lifted and inviting without being cloying. Taste: The entry is round and fresh, with white peach and nectarine dominating the initial palate. At mid-palate, gooseberry and a hint of pineapple emerge, balanced by crisp, well-integrated acidity. Notes of lemon custard and apple add depth without heaviness. Finish: Bright and clean, tapering with lingering citrus and stone fruit. The acidity keeps everything taut and refreshing through a moderate-length close. How to Drink Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc Serve well chilled, between 45–50°F, in a standard white wine glass to let the aromatics open up. This Chenin Blanc is versatile enough for both casual sipping and mixed drinks. A White Wine Spritzer plays to its natural brightness and clean finish. A French 75 (substituting Chenin Blanc for Champagne) works well because the wine's fruit-forward profile and acidity hold up against lemon and gin. It also performs nicely in a Sangria Blanca, where the apricot and nectarine notes complement fresh summer fruit. Best For Serving at a Shabbat or Passover dinner where kosher certification is required Warm-weather patio drinking with friends who prefer off-dry, fruit-driven whites Gifting to someone exploring California white wines beyond Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Pairing with lighter fare at weeknight dinners or brunch gatherings Frequently Asked Questions What does Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc taste like? It delivers ripe apricot, white peach, and gooseberry flavors with honeysuckle aromatics and a bright, clean finish driven by fresh acidity. The overall impression is fruit-forward and refreshing rather than heavy or oaky. How does Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc compare to Dry Creek Vineyard Dry Chenin Blanc? Dry Creek Vineyard's version is vinified in a drier, more mineral style, while Baron Herzog leans into riper stone fruit and a slightly rounder mouthfeel. Baron Herzog also carries full kosher certification, which Dry Creek does not, making it a distinct choice for observant consumers. Is Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc good for beginners? Yes — its approachable fruit character, moderate alcohol, and clean acidity make it an excellent entry point for anyone new to white wine or to the Chenin Blanc grape specifically. Where is Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc made? The grapes are sourced from the Clarksburg appellation in California's Sacramento River Delta, a region known for cool-climate whites. The wine is produced by Herzog Wine Cellars, which operates in Oxnard, California. What foods pair well with Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc? Grilled white fish benefits from the wine's acidity cutting through mild richness. Chicken schnitzel or roasted poultry with herbs complements its stone fruit notes. Fresh goat cheese salads mirror the wine's bright, tangy profile. Thai or Vietnamese dishes with lemongrass and mild spice play off the residual sweetness. Fruit tarts or almond pastries echo the apricot and nectarine character on the palate. What sizes does Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc come in? Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle. Is Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc worth the price? This wine positions firmly in the entry-level value tier, and its combination of Platinum-level competition awards, sustainable farming credentials, and kosher certification makes it an unusually strong offering at its price point. Why Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc? Few wines at this price point carry both a Platinum medal from an international sommelier competition and full Kosher-for-Passover certification. The Clarksburg appellation provides a genuine terroir advantage for Chenin Blanc — the cool Delta breezes preserve the grape's natural acidity in a way that warmer inland California regions simply cannot replicate. Herzog Wine Cellars' pioneering adoption of the Lodi Rules sustainable winegrowing program in 2005 adds an environmental credibility that many larger producers have only recently begun to pursue. For anyone seeking a reliably fresh, fruit-driven white wine that meets strict kosher standards without sacrificing quality, this remains one of the strongest values in its category.
