2013 Balcones 1 Texas Single Malt 106 Proof 750ml

Experience a groundbreaking piece of American whisky history with the Balcones Texas Single Malt Special Release 2013, the Original Texas Whisky. This high-proof, pioneering expression showcases a complex symphony of dark fruits, rich smoke, and intense malt character, a true testament to Balcones' innovative spirit and the unique Texas terroir. Tasting Notes Nose: A captivating and complex bouquet immediately announces itself. Initial impressions of rich, dark caramelized sugars and toasted malts give way to an alluring array of chocolate-covered cherries, dried mission figs, and a hint of roasted coffee beans. Underlying notes of seasoned oak, vanilla extract, and a touch of leather provide depth, while a subtle whisper of smoked paprika or mesquite-smoked brisket, characteristic of Balcones, weaves through the sweetness. Palate: The palate arrives with a luxurious, chewy texture that fully coats the mouth. The high proof is wonderfully integrated, delivering a warming sensation rather than a burn. Flavors explode with a remarkable balance of sweet and savory. Dark chocolate and espresso lead, quickly followed by plum preserves, black currant, and a distinct nutty character (pecan or walnut). A gentle, smoldering smokiness, like burnt sugar or singed cedar, interplays with notes of dark honey, marzipan, and a touch of peppery spice, showcasing the unique Texas terroir and malt influence. Finish: The finish is exceptionally long, evolving, and deeply satisfying. It lingers with persistent notes of baking spices – cinnamon, nutmeg, and a whisper of clove – alongside dark fruit reduction and a pleasant dryness from the well-aged oak. The subtle smokiness returns on the retrohale, accompanied by a final flourish of cacao nibs and a lingering sweetness reminiscent of a well-aged port wine. A touch of minerality or damp earth provides a grounding counterpoint to the richness.
