The Umpqua Backstabber, designed by carp fishing veteran Jay Zimmerman, is the gold standard for commercial carp flies, though its design makes it versatile enough to imitate leeches, crayfish, or large nymphs. The defining feature is the upside-down hook positioning (achieved with dumbbell eyes on the top of the hook shank) which allows the fly to ride hook-point-up, minimizing snags while dredging the bottom for wary fish.
