Authentic Relief Carving Nupe Door

From the Nupe people of central Nigeria's Niger River region, this door is built from five narrow vertical planks, each bearing its own distinct emblem, true to the tradition's eclectic, asymmetrical layout. The central plank carries the standout feature: a deep, sculptural high-relief totem depicting a sacred scarab, beetle, or riverine water creature, its textured abdomen and crowned mandible form rendered in real three-dimensional carving rather than flat incising. Flanking planks carry diamond crosshatch lattice, fine punctate dot-line work, undulating wavy lines suggesting water or serpent forms, and small palm or leaf motifs, together forming a rich, mixed visual vocabulary across the panel.  The door retains its original integrated wood pivot mechanism, visible at the base, confirming its history as a functional compound entrance rather than a purely decorative panel. Wear is honest throughout, with a deep, consistent patina. This combination of sculptural totemic carving alongside geometric and aquatic motifs represents an exceptional example within the Nupe tradition, the central relief figure in particular is a rare, standout feature. Mounted on a custom black stand, the door commands real presence. Give it a prominent wall where its sculptural centerpiece can be fully appreciated. *Origin: DE-COR sourced antique; Nupe tradition; Nigeria, West Africa *Era: 19th Century *Material: Hand-carved multi-plank hardwood panel with deep sculptural relief scarab/river totem on center plank, mixed geometric and aquatic motifs; original integrated pivot mechanism intact *Finish: Natural aged patina, unpainted *Size: Door 35"W x 2"D x 66"H *Color: Warm brown wood tone, deep consistent patina *Condition/Care: Light-to-moderate antique wear (honest surface wear consistent with age, no structural concerns noted). What is the significance of the central raised insect / beetle carving on this Nupe door? A: The central high-relief totem represents a sacred scarab beetle or water guardian spirit. In Nupe compound architecture along the Niger River, raised totemic creatures were carved at the physical center of entrance doors to serve as spiritual guardians (al-jannu wards), protecting the household against bad fortune while honoring riverine and agricultural abundance.
