You spend a third of your life in one room with the door closed, and it is the room nobody thinks about. The Austin Air Bedroom Machine (B402C1) is Austin Air’s answer to that: the full-size HealthMate cabinet, the same 60 square feet of medical-grade HEPA and the same fifteen pounds of carbon, with one extra stage on the end that the HealthMate does not have. The fifth stage Military-grade HEGA carbon cloth — High Efficiency Gas Adsorption. It is a tightly woven carbon fabric developed for chemical and biological defense, and its surface area is enormous, which is what gives gases somewhere to go. Everything the HealthMate does Underneath the HEGA stage it is the same machine: two pre-filters, 780 cubic inches of activated carbon and zeolite, and 60 square feet of medical-grade HEPA rated to 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. Built to run all night Three-speed continuous-duty fan in a powder-coated steel cabinet with a 360-degree intake. Set it on low at bedtime and it becomes part of the room within a night or two. Why a bedroom is its own problem A living room gets aired out. A bedroom gets shut, and then one or two people breathe the same air in it for eight hours. Whatever came off the new carpet, the gas stove downstairs or the road outside settles in there and stays. That is the case for putting the better machine in the bedroom rather than the living room, and it is the whole reason this model exists. Bedroom Machine, HealthMate or Immunity Machine? The Bedroom Machine adds the HEGA cloth to the standard HealthMate; the Immunity Machine adds HEGA and two extra layers of chemically treated media. If chemicals and smoke are your problem rather than sleep, look at the HealthMate Plus before either of them. Common questions What is HEGA carbon cloth, in plain English? Ordinary carbon is loose granules. HEGA is carbon woven into a cloth, which packs a huge amount of surface area into a thin sheet. It was developed for military protective gear against chemical and biological agents. In this machine it sits after the HEPA filter and gives gas molecules one more chance to be caught on the way out. Is it quieter than the HealthMate? It uses the same three-speed fan, so it is the same machine for noise. On low it is a soft steady hum most people find easier to sleep with than silence. On high it is clearly audible. Bedroom Machine or HealthMate Plus? Different jobs. The HealthMate Plus treats its carbon to grab chemicals — formaldehyde, benzene, wildfire smoke gases. The Bedroom Machine keeps plain carbon and adds the HEGA cloth instead. If a chemical smell is what is bothering you, buy the Plus. If you want the most thorough machine for a room you sleep in, buy this. Does the color change anything? No. All four are the same machine in a different powder coat — same filter, same fan, same warranty, same price. How often does the filter get changed? Five years under normal home use, and Austin Air pro-rates a replacement if you need one sooner.
