athlétisme  012 | Framed Vintage Photo - Matte Canvas, Framed (Multi-color) | Forgotten Moments, Forever Remembered. 1 of 5 | Les Ajax Overhead Balance Study | c. 1928–1935 Vintage Photograph Framed Canvas Wall Art This vintage photograph is part of the Walt & Pete® Athlétisme Collection. Athlétisme explores the visual history of sport, recreation, physical culture, and athletic achievement through historical photography. From swimmers and wrestlers to gymnasts, boxers, rowers, runners, and strength athletes, these photographs document the ways individuals presented themselves through athletic identity and physical accomplishment. This framed canvas wall art reproduces a historical sports photograph showing two acrobatic performers executing a dramatic overhead balancing pose before a studio drapery backdrop. The image survives as a valuable record of athletic performance photography and physical culture during the early twentieth century. The photograph documents visible elements of strength, balance, coordination, and theatrical athletic presentation. The performers wear matching Greco-Roman-inspired costumes featuring decorative geometric borders, wrist cuffs, and athletic footwear. The studio setting, controlled lighting, and integrated "Les Ajax" inscription suggest the image was produced as a publicity photograph for a professional acrobatic act. The composition creates a compelling visual study of movement and control, making it equally suitable for a home gym, office, study, fitness studio, sports history collection, or gallery wall. Its combination of athletic subject matter and historical photography offers distinctive sports history décor with lasting visual appeal. Original Photograph Record Title: Les Ajax Overhead Balance Study Before Studio Drapery Backdrop Date (estimated): c. 1928–1935 Photographer: Unknown Place of Production: Unknown Medium: Gelatin silver developing-out print Dimensions: Small-format publicity photograph, 3.5 x 5.5 in. Original Photo – Condition & Preservation Status The original photograph exhibits characteristics typical of surviving vernacular performance photography from the interwar period. Observable condition issues include moderate tonal compression, scattered surface abrasions, minor scratches, edge wear, and reduced separation within darker portions of the image. These age-related factors slightly diminish fine costume detail and backdrop texture while remaining consistent with historical photographic materials of this era. Conservation treatment and careful digitization improve legibility while preserving the original artifact. Material, Process & Historical Placement Based upon tonal range, contrast structure, image surface characteristics, and photographic presentation, the photograph was likely produced as a gelatin silver print during the late 1920s or early 1930s. The coordinated costumes, recurring backdrop, and integrated "Les Ajax" branding suggest a publicity portfolio documenting a professional acrobatic act. Such photographs were commonly used by circus performers, music-hall entertainers, and variety theater artists seeking theatrical bookings during the interwar period. Attribution remains limited due to the absence of surviving photographer, studio, or venue information.
