Astrea Snail

The Astrea snail is one of the smaller, more commonly used algae eaters in the saltwater hobby. Astrea snails will help clean your glass of algae and will also feed on nuisance algae in the aquarium, including cyanobacteria and diatoms. These snails prefer environments with sufficient rock work for maneuvering around the aquarium, and unlike Trochus snails, generally cannot flip themselves over. Introduction to Astrea Snail (Algae Grazer & Cleanup Crew Essential) Astrea snails (Astrea tecta) are hardy, reef-safe algae eaters that excel at removing film algae, diatoms, and biofilm from rocks and glass surfaces. These snails are efficient grazers, making them an essential part of any cleanup crew. While they are excellent at controlling algae, Astrea snails cannot right themselves if flipped over, which can lead to starvation or predation. It’s important to monitor them and assist if necessary. Care Requirements Care Level: Easy – Low-maintenance but requires monitoring Minimum Tank Size: 10+ gallons Aquarium Setup: Requires live rock and glass surfaces for grazing Astrea snails thrive in established reef tanks with moderate algae growth, where they can continuously graze on surfaces. Diet & Nutrition Astrea snails are herbivorous grazers, feeding on a variety of nuisance algae. Diet: Herbivorous – Prefers diatoms, film algae, and biofilm Recommended Foods: Naturally occurring algae on rock and glass Diatoms and film algae Supplemental seaweed sheets if algae is scarce Astrea snails do not consume cyanobacteria or macroalgae and should only be added to established tanks with a steady algae supply. Lifespan & Growth Rate Lifespan: 3-5 years Growth Rate: Slow – Typically reaches up to 1.5 inches With proper care and a stable food source, Astrea snails can thrive for several years. Temperament & Compatibility Temperament: Peaceful – Does not interact with or harm tankmates Reef Safe? Yes – Does not harm corals, fish, or invertebrates Common Challenges & Considerations Flipping Over: Astrea snails cannot right themselves if overturned, making them vulnerable to starvation and predation. Requires Algae to Thrive: May need supplemental feeding if algae levels are low. Slow Movers: Unlike some other snails, Astrea snails move at a slow pace, requiring patience in high-algae environments. To ensure their success, check regularly for overturned snails and maintain a stable environment. Water Conditions Temperature: 74-80°F dKH (Alkalinity): 8-12 pH: 8.1-8.4 Specific Gravity: 1.024-1.026
