Vision in Red Astilbe

Looking for a showy standout in your shaded landscape? Gain bold color and summer-long texture with Vision in Red Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Red')! Starting in late spring, a tall, multi-branched stem lined with many tiny, deep-red buds rises high above the dark green, fine-textured foliage clump. You'll watch in amazement as the many red flowers open into a glorious, red-purple plume. These magnificent, feathery plumes will be the star of your garden design for weeks! Snip the plumes for indoor cut flower arrangements. You can bundle them and hang them upside down to dry for long-lasting dried arrangements, too. Leave a few outdoors because they will attract plenty of beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds to sip at the nectar-rich blooms. Beyond the elegant flower plumes, Astilbe is widely admired for its attractive foliage. This variety features a lovely bronze overcast. The deep, dark lacy foliage adds a ferny texture to garden beds long after the blooms have faded. Vision in Red Astilbe truly makes a substantial contribution to those shady parts of your landscape. You might hear these plants called "False Spirea". Luckily, deer and rabbits don't prefer the taste. It's generally pest-free and disease-resistant! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 8, these are incredibly cold-tolerant and heat-resistant perennials! Landscape Application: Vision in Red offers a striking color contrast to the typical cool green tones. Rely on their ornamental impact to decorate your shaded border. With so many Astilbe to choose from, you might be tempted to start a colorful collection! Vision in Red variety starts the flowering display early in the season. Add later-blooming colors like Delft Pink to overlap and extend the flower show! Go big with this bold perennial. Planted a massed drift running along the length of your shady border. You'll create a very natural look if you avoid straight lines or even spacing. Let your planting "flow" in sinuous curves. Vary the spacing from 15 - 24 inches apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Move from a single plant on either end of the drift to using 2, 3, or even 4 plants deep at the widest point. Perk up the look of mature evergreen trees by creating a narrow raised bed on the east or west side. Plant a staggered double row of Vision in Red Astilbe all along the bed 18 inches apart. Underplant your flowering deciduous trees with Vision in Red Astilbe. Include spring-blooming bulbs in that garden bed, as well. The luxuriant new growth will hide the yellowing foliage of the spent Daffodils, Tulips, and Hyacinths. If you want an early seasonal display, try these as a "Thriller" in large exterior containers. The frilly, fluffy flowers tower above the rest of the plants. As the blooms fade, change them out and plant in your landscape. Rely on these long-lived, ornamental perennials as a staple in your shade garden. You'll adore the big boost of color of this easy garden feature! Create your own shaded paradise, complete with a hammock and outdoor table for your pitcher of iced tea. While away a lazy afternoon in your space, and feel your cares slip from your shoulders!
