Randall's Assessor Basslet - Philippines

Assessor randalli Randall’s Assessor Basslet is a small, striking reef fish prized for its vivid coloration and unique swimming habits. Adults have a deep blue body adorned with darker spots and bright blue-edged fins, while juveniles may display slightly different patterns. This species often swims upside down beneath reef overhangs or within caves, adding a fascinating visual element to the aquarium. Randall’s Assessor Basslets typically grow to about 3 inches (7.5 cm), making them a manageable and attractive choice for marine hobbyists. In the wild, they are found in shallow reefs of the western Pacific, including areas around Japan and Taiwan, favoring dimly lit or shaded locations at depths of 1–6 meters. They are generally shy, but can become more confident in well-structured aquariums with ample hiding spots. In the aquarium, Randall’s Assessor Basslets thrive in tanks with plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices that mimic their natural habitat. They are carnivorous and require a diet of finely chopped fresh or frozen marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, fish, and squid, ideally fed multiple times daily. Considered reef-safe, Randall’s Assessor Basslets do not harm corals or invertebrates. With proper care, their vivid blue coloration, small size, and intriguing upside-down swimming behavior make them a rewarding addition for experienced marine aquarists.
