Born in Ethiopia and based in Virginia, designer Jomo Tariku conceived this Ashanti Stool as a modern take on Akan chief ceremonial seats used in 19th- and 20th-century Ghana. Growing up in Ethiopia, Tariku was drawn to the eclectic art and furniture pieces that his father collected from all over Africa. Tariku developed his craft during summer breaks at a local furniture builder in the Ethiopian city of Addis Ababa and went on to study industrial design at the University of Kansas. The Ashanti Stool is made in Virginia, crafted with precision using a CNC wood-milling machine and hand-finished and assembled. This height-adjustable design is made from water-resistant Baltic birch plywood with a double black stain finish and is made to order. It measures 15.75–17.9h x 14w x 8.5"d.
