This original 1934 French poster by Nathan (Garamond) was created for the 11e Salon des Arts Ménagers, held at the Grand Palais in Paris. The Salon des Arts Ménagers was one of France’s most important annual exhibitions, dedicated to showcasing the latest innovations in household design, technology, and modern living. Founded in 1923, it became a celebration of progress and practicality, where art and industry met to redefine the modern home. Nathan’s design captures the clean geometry and airbrushed gradients of early 1930s modernism. The stylized figure, rendered in bold red, white, and blue, holds a feather duster and a small house, symbols of domestic efficiency and comfort. The composition reflects the optimism of interwar France, when design was seen as a means to improve everyday life through simplicity, function, and beauty. The poster embodies the Art Deco aesthetic at its peak, with a balance of elegance and purpose that perfectly suited the exhibition’s theme. Today, it stands as a striking example of how French graphic art blended utility and imagination to promote a vision of progress in the modern age. *Please note poster is conservation mounted on linen.
