Textured Alder Shelf

Most shelves are sanded until the wood disappears into a smooth, anonymous surface. These do the opposite — they keep a worked, textured face you can feel, the kind of raw, tactile character that usually only comes from reclaimed or hand-hewn wood. Each is solid alder, warm-toned and gently knotted, finished in one of four textures: Antique, Driftwood, Milled, or Weathered, ranging from softly aged to openly rough-sawn. It is a genuinely uncommon thing to find — textured solid hardwood is difficult to produce, and few makers offer it at all. Because it is made to order, it comes in the size your wall needs — 1.75 inches thick, in lengths from 12 to 90 inches and depths from 6 to 14, cut to your measurement rather than a stock size. The texture is the finish; nothing is coated over it, so what you touch is the worked wood itself.
