Ardbeg Twenty One 2016

Experience the rare elegance of Ardbeg Twenty One 2016, a mature masterpiece aged for over two decades in ex-bourbon casks. This non chill-filtered Islay single malt offers an exquisitely balanced journey of refined peat smoke, sweet vanilla, and complex maritime notes. A true testament to time and masterful distillation from one of Scotland's most iconic distilleries. Tasting Notes Nose: A sophisticated and complex nose, far from the youthful peat monsters Ardbeg is known for. Initial medicinal notes of iodine and antiseptic give way gracefully to maritime air, crushed seashells, and a faint hint of smoked fish. Underneath, a sweetness emerges with candied lemon peel, vanilla crème brûlée, toasted almond, and a touch of heather honey, indicative of its long maturation in ex-bourbon casks. A whisper of damp earth and old leather adds further depth. Palate: The palate is remarkably elegant and incredibly well-balanced, a testament to its age. The initial arrival is a gentle wave of warm peat smoke, less aggressive than younger Ardbegs, more akin to smoldering embers. This is swiftly followed by a rich, buttery texture carrying notes of vanilla custard, ripe orchard fruits like baked apple and pear, and a delicate spice of white pepper and ginger. A subtle brininess and a hint of dark chocolate emerge mid-palate, intertwined with a lingering sweetness of demerara sugar and a whisper of espresso. The 92 proof provides a satisfying warmth without overwhelming the intricate flavors. Finish: Long, lingering, and immensely satisfying. The peat smoke gently recedes, leaving behind a delightful warmth and a delightful interplay of sweet and savory. Notes of salted caramel, toasted oak, and a faint chewiness of licorice root persist. The maritime influence returns, like a memory of a cool ocean breeze, coupled with a pleasant mineral dryness and a final, delicate wisp of extinguished bonfire, inviting another sip.
