Ardbeg Ardbog 2013

Ardbog 2001 is a masterpiece of balance, expertly marrying Ardbeg's famed peaty intensity with sweeter, richer cask influences. This non-chill filtered Islay single malt delivers an extraordinary depth of flavor, offering a captivating journey through smoke, sea, and unexpected sweetness. A truly unique and complex expression for the discerning whisky aficionado. Tasting Notes Nose: A profound and captivating nose, revealing classic Ardbeg peat smoke upfront, but with an intriguing complexity. Maritime notes of brine, seaweed, and crushed oyster shells intermingle with a surprising sweetness of candied lemon peel, vanilla custard, and a hint of dark chocolate. Underneath, a subtle herbal quality emerges, reminiscent of medicinal bandages and damp moss, balanced by a touch of grilled pineapple and smoked paprika. The non-chill filtration undoubtedly allows for an incredible richness of aromatic compounds. Palate: The palate is immediately powerful and assertive, delivering a full-bodied experience that coats the tongue. The peat smoke is intense yet beautifully integrated, evolving from a raw bonfire char to a more refined, earthy, and iodine-rich smoke. This is complemented by vibrant citrus notes – key lime and grapefruit zest – alongside a creamy vanilla and salted caramel sweetness. Layers of black pepper, aniseed, and a faint brininess arrive, followed by hints of espresso, leather, and a nutty dryness. The 52.1% ABV provides a significant warming sensation without being overtly alcoholic, allowing the intricate flavors to truly sing. Finish: The finish is exceptionally long and multifaceted. The smoky warmth lingers indefinitely, gradually transforming into a pleasant campfire ember and dry ash. Sweet notes of burnt sugar and dark fruit recede, making way for persistent maritime qualities, a faint trace of medicinal peat, and a delightful spicy tingle. A dry oak grip and a subtle bitterness add to the complexity, leaving a memorable impression of Ardbeg's signature character, with an elevated elegance from the unique vatting. About the Distillery Ardbeg Distillery, established in 1815 on the rugged south coast of Islay, Scotland, is renowned globally for producing heavily peated single malt Scotch whiskies. Despite its tumultuous history, including closures, Ardbeg has consistently championed an untamed yet complex smoky character, beloved by connoisseurs for its distinctive depth and maritime influence.
