Ardbeg Almost There 2008

Despite the name, this 2008 bottling of Ardbeg's 'Almost There' is a complete and compelling Islay Single Malt, offering a profound journey into intense peat and surprising sweetness. Distilled in 1998 and non-chill filtered, this 10-year-old release exemplifies Ardbeg's signature bold and complex character, making it a pivotal expression in the distillery's experimental series. Tasting Notes Nose: A captivating and complex nose, initiating with Ardbeg's signature potent peat smoke, reminiscent of a crackling bonfire by the sea, intertwined with brine and iodine. Beneath this powerful smoke, hints of sweet vanilla, creamy toffee, and subtle citrus notes emerge, followed by a surprising green apple tartness and a whisper of tar or antiseptic. There's a mineralic quality, almost like wet stones, and a touch of heather or wild herbs. Palate: The palate delivers an immediate explosion of intense peat, coating the mouth with a medicinal, smoky essence. This is quickly balanced by a surprising sweetness: rich caramel, dark chocolate, and a juicy plum or dark fruit character. A peppery spice builds alongside a savory saltiness, hinting at dried seaweed and grilled meats. The non-chill filtration ensures a viscous, oily mouthfeel, allowing for a prolonged exploration of its multifaceted flavors, including notes of coffee grounds and licorice. Finish: A triumphantly long and lingering finish, dominated by waves of sweet and smoky peat that slowly recede, leaving a delightful warmth. Earthy undertones, burnt sugar, and a lingering maritime influence persist. A subtle bitterness, akin to dark cocoa, eventually gives way to a clean, almost refreshing aftertaste, inviting another sip to unravel its enduring complexity.
