Arctostaphylos 'Lester Rowntree', Manzanita

Its open habit reveals an internal framework of beautiful dark mahogany branches. Copper-red new growth matures to pewter-gray-green foliage that sets off dainty clusters of rose-pink flowers — beautiful color all around. Selected by the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, a hybrid between pajaroensis and possibly obispoensis.  In our garden, it is planted on the north side of a gentle slope with some shade from Fagus sylvatica 'Red Obelisk'. Given the shade, it has exceeded expectations but we do not expect it to grow much taller than 4-ft in its location. We were lucky enough to see it grow down in California and marvel at its height of at least 7-ft.  Mature size: 4-6 ft tall x 5-8 ft wide Minimum temperature: 5° F
